Bit of a quandry on this one. If Pete Burns Jacket is Gorilla (Or Colobus Monkey as is more likley according to PETA) Then it is an endangered species and is not caught for food or Farmed in any manner and Hence the book should be thrown at him. On the other hand why do we complain at those who wear rabbit fur? We wear Sheepskin jackets and Leather coats, trousers and shoes and surely given that the fur comes from a non-endangered farmed source that should be acceptable?

Never understood the hysteria about fur coats.

It depends how old it is doesn't it? It could be an antique from a time when these things were more acceptable - surely you shouldn't have to bin things because times change?

Edited to say I was referring to Pete's monkey coat.

Sheepskin and leather are by products

Mink was solely farmed for its fur.

Back in the good old days you could have Golden Fox Fur coats, if you had the money, not many Golden Foxes left mind you...

Its a tricky one really.

It is expensive and worn by wealthy people. Hence, like the ban on hunting, affords an easy cover for the usual Marxist/Class War facists to bully and assult another section of society whilst claiming to maintain the moral high ground.

I think the hysteria is due to the animals being killed purely for the purpose of trendy clothing rather than being endangered. Endangerment just gives double-lentilist-ammunition.
Sheep/cows etc are killed for food anyway so youve naturally got a jacket left after cutting the steaks out of them.

It is also very warm clothing, so it serves a practical purpose.

Never agreed with this 'class war' stuff.

I did for about 2 weeks at school when I was trying to impress a lentilist girl who had large knockers that I was trying to date.

Are you saying that the sabotuer was wearing a fur coat?

It's not only rabbit fur, seems to be dog and cat fur as well. Some people think they have a rabbit collar and it's the remains of Mrs Jone's moggie. I think fur is pretty uncool myself and shallow.

I think it's pretty nice and warm but usually looks loads better on the original owner. I don't have a problem owning a sheepskin jacket though. As long as the animal is used properly in it's entirety and not just killed for it's coat that's the borderline for me.

never understood the whole mink thing, they're horrible vicious little creatures, at least they make nice coats. Gorillas are quite cool though, might leave them alone, i wanna be reincarnated as an orang u tang so no coats made out of them either please

I've never understood the "leather is OK but fur is wrong" arguement.

Personally I'm not keen on fur, however thats merely a fashion comment not anything else. Rather like leather... (cue comments...)

If you believe that it's wrong to kill an animal for its skin, does it matter whether or not you eat it? or it's turned into dog food? or fertiliser or....

At the end of the day it's still dead and someone is still wearing a jacket made out of it's skin.

IMHO I believe the PETA nutters and their kindred target fur because it's rarely worn in the UK. Leather is very popular, most people wear leather shoes and the leather jacket is as popular as it ever was.

Fur is uncommon and wealthy women (who would predominately wear it) are an easier target for activists than trying to throw paint over the hairier members of a motorcycle cub meet...

Personally, I agree with restrictions on the trade in endangered species - there is a reason for that, they are endangered. (however the counter arguement that removing their economic value isnt going to help the species much does hold some weight).

Other than that, I really don't care what people wear. Fur? Leather? Feathers? so long as its sourced from captive bred animals where is the problem?

If you object to one, you really should be objecting to all the others, otherwise you're making a very artificial distinction...

Not true, we are meat eaters so the hide is a useful by product. Very useful in cold climates. To breed an animal for it's pelt so we can just look good is wrong in my book. Where's the respect gone? Tallbloke sums it up for me.

Wear an expensive fur and you're no better then a chav to me. I ain't impressed in the slightest.
