I contacted TVR to have a chassis check done on the Cerbera I now own, just to make sure back in September. The whole thing took 5mins over the phone (after sending them a fax) all was well; I bought the car job done

I received an e-mail from TVR this morning asking for £30+vat for my recent chassis check - 12weeks later This charge was never mentioned and I’m wondering if anyone else here has been asked to pay retrospectively for this check?

Cheers
Paul

If I were you I'd ignore it, or email them a picture of £30+VAT as payment. If they didn't say there would be a charge and they supplyed the information before billing they can whistle for it
I had one of these done about 6 months ago and never heard anything about a charge and I didn't buy the car.
I even used to get HPI checks done at a friendly BMW dealer without any charge

I applied to TVR back in September for them confirm the colours on my Griff as I want to match some carpet.

As per their instructions I confirmed my request by fax, chased them some weeks later when I was told that they had to do this information search manually and its very time consuming and they would be considering making a charge in future, although I would be OK as I had applied before they changed the rules.

They came back with totaly the wrong colours for my car, they said its red whereas its blue (glad I HPI'd it when I bought it or I would have been getting worried!) but if I would like to fax my request again they would look at it again.

November and no response so I chased them again only to be told how long and involved the process is as its all done manually etc etc.

This morning I got a letter from TVR, At last...., but oh no, the letter was a request for £30 + VAT for them to carry out my request!

As per raceboy's sugesstion I have no intention of paying it as I was not informed of these charges. If TVR are/were serious about charging for this surely they would ask for payment before hand?

I think they've just started to charge for this service and are trying to get something for it. As I said mine was very quick, don't know if this has something to do with the type or age of the car.

It's pathetic, like the time my bank tried to charge me £5 for cashing a £30 cheque (they never saw me again).

So the factory can sell a car for £30,000+, then can't be arsed to go over to a filing cabinet, pull out the papers and go back to the phone and say 'Red'?

I was thinkning of calling TVR to see if my Griff had ever been the subject of a recall - do you think they'd try for £30 on that as well?

I faxed TVR a request to check out the engine history of my Tuscan before I bought it - never heard anything from them since other than an invite to the motorshow! Bought the car anyway, but I would have been happy to pay £30 at the time to get the info. I think their customer service is 'variable'.

I don't think Griffs have ever had a recall.

Bah,

Got exactly the same e-mail response as Paul below, having just requested the history for my car, never even said I wanted chassis check!

Are they likely to have enough history to be worth £30?

'I don't think Griffs have ever had a recall.'

The thing that gave me the idea was that some Cerberas have had a recall about wheels. But I suppose in general TVR wouldn't be too bothered about recalls - they don't have the space for 5,000 cars!

Compare that to BMW: 11-year old 320 convertible, I was 3rd owner, got a letter in the post about the radiator cap. Took it to a local dealer, they changed it instantly for free. Could TVR do that?

This is exactly what I got - I sent back a polite mail reminding TVR I hadn't be told of these charges when requesting a check and got the following reply back

Dear Paul,

Thank you for your reply.
Recently charging £30 plus vat has been discussed in the company. This is now being taken into action Sorry for any misunderstanding in the past with the chassis checks .
If you are still wanting a check on the engine and want to pay, please contact me.

Kind regards,

Hannah Bullock.

It's worth challenging if you were not advised of this "hidden" charge. Needless to say I no long need/want a chassis check so wont be paying.
