I appear to have aquired a pop balloon in the bottom right of my screen telling me that my computer is infected and that I should click on it install antimalware. It takes me to the website for SpywareStrike 2.5.

I have tried everything buit this balloon will not go away. Any suggestions much appreciated.

I have run Adaware and Ewido antimalaware to no effect.

Don't you just love it when anti-spyware companies put thier spyware on your machine to advertise thier anti-spyware?

Try running Ad-aware or Spybot in safe mode , that sometimes will kill things without going to extremes.

Try opening Windows explorer and see if this is present:

C:Program FilesSpywareStrikeSpywareStrike.exe

If it is boot into safe mode and try to delete it or if it's running in "processes" in Task Manager, stop it running and do another scan.

These threads on the Tom Coyote forum may give you an answer as well:

I've done all of this several times now. Followed the other threads and still this bastard pop up balloon will not go away. It appears to be linked to the Windows update logo.

There is no sign of the SpywareStrike software on the PC, that only reappears if I click on the balloon. It is doing my head in now.

Sounds like a clone of SpyAxe so it may be possible to use SmitRem to remove it? If that doesn't work, apparently the Ewido security suite can detect and remove it.

The Symantec Security Response lists the places that it installs itself. If you've got the patience, it should be possible to unpick it manually?

There are also manual removal instructions here.

Try MicroSoft Antispyware its free and surprisingly good if you take time to explore the features. Seriously try it.

There is a lengthy response on this forum on removing it, if you want to read it, see if it looks familiar www.webuser.co.uk/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/251164/an/0/page/0

Well after trying everything without success I tried the following old fashioned method

Try and ignore it and it might go away.

So far it seems to have worked. No pop up for several days and all mention of the spyware has disappeared!
