Hi again everyone, if I'm in first gear in Tiptronic and i floor the gas i can't get the wheels to spin(not that i want them to), It's as though it slips a little and then I get full rev's so pulling away is slower than just dropping the clutch....is there some sort of anti wheel spin device built in...sorry if i sound a bit thick here thanks for your help

Tiptronic AND clutch You can't have both If you've got PSM, it will stop the wheels spinning by design. You have to turn it off if you want to unstick the wheels.

I understand i can't have a clutch and tip..what i men't was that on a clutched car the wheels will spin if you drop it..on the tip there appears to be a lag of some sort like a slip, and im not sure if the car has PSM how would i tell Thanks

The button marked PSM on the dash is a good clue... If it's there, you have it, if it's not, you don't In a tiptronic there is a lockup clutch which you can sometimes feel spinning before it fully engages.

I dont have a switch on the dash...so it must be the lockup clutch i can feel thanks for all your help and yes get Blair out

Err, the tip is an auto, not a manual, so by nature it will slip (hydraulic drive effectively) until the torque converter locks up (motorway speeds in top typically).

Mr Sideways, the tip has a mechanically locking torque converter. It will lock in all gears, not just top, so unlike 'normal' autos, you don't get the usual 'slip' with a tiptronic.

You will struggle to break any traction in the dry though, because you are not able to instantly apply peak torque to the rear wheels like you can when you drop the clutch in a manual.

err... not sure if you can still do this BUT.

Rev it up in N, then pull stick into D with revs applied.
You may need to H&T to do it...

Never tried it on a Porsche but should spin the wheels.

Sounds like a recipe for an air conditioned gearbox casing and an Exxon Valdez scenario under the car to me

Dont need H+T (heel and toe) - keep left foot on brake and right foot on accelerator (at revs) then release the brake and floor it. If that doesnt make the wheels spin, nothing will. . . . . but as mentioned previously, probably ill advised . . .

Forgive me for being drunk but IIRC heel and toe is a way of operating both brake and throttle with one foot whilst using the left foot to operate the clutch.

How the hell can this be applicable if you've got an automatic and only two pedals? Surely all you need is Yankee-stop-light-grand-prix style - left foot on brake, rev up the engine in N, slam shifter into D, nail throttle and sidestep brake.

There's no way on earth I'd do this with anyone's car, BTW.

Besides, you have to be pretty brutal in the dry to spin the rear wheels of 911s and Boxsters due to the engine weight over the rear wheels, even with a manual gearbox. My car doesn't like this sort of treatment, and a Boxster with fat rear tyres and electronics is even less likely to do burnouts. Then again perhaps I'm too soft a driver

you can tell i don't drive autos much, forgot that you have a spare leg.

Anyway in the good old days, it was the only way to make an auto look sporty off the line....

Last time i tried this was on a Honda Moped and it was slightly messy.

I,ll try it with my BMW and let you know if it works.

You mean the old C50 "hold the gearlever down and rev the bollox off it" technique? Alright on a fifty quid moped, but I doubt anyone here will try it.

I'm confused John . What happens when you stop while in drive? And then when you pull away? There has to be some kind of slip mechanism or the car would stall (maybe it does?).

BMW would not engage D unless both the brake was applied and the engine revs were below 1500, clever those germans....

However could hold the car on the brakes in D with full throttle applied, car then sets off with tiny wheel spin, not dramatic though.

Yes, the torque converter is able to slip, sa you say, for when you are standing still in D etc. However, it also has 1:1 mechanical lock up, which prevents the slip once you are on the power.
