I'm really considering buying this 1981 911 Turbo. Does anyone know of or has seen the car. What would be your opinions on the car.
It has undergone an engine out rebuilt last year at the garage the guy owns, I think the garage trades under the name of BOSS930 or Sub City. The garage is based near Sheffield. Has anyone heard of these people or used them. The car has had a full body respray. The engine has been completely rebuilt and the only original part to the engine is the crankcase. He has had the engine bored out to 3.6 litres. It has the later oil feed chain tensioners fitted. The gearbox has been rebuilt and is still under warranty. It has done 4000 miles since all the work was done. He also says that he has spent over 40K buying and rebuilding it.
I would be looking to detune the car after I purchase it, as I don't want to be having to rebuild the engine. Plus I think that power is over the top for on the road use. How do these engine cope with running at 500Bhp. I will also be having it checked over before I buy it. Are there any good Porsche pre purchase specialist in the Sheffield area? He also mentioned that the car is part of the Porsche owners club gb, If that makes any difference.

Here's the ad for the car : www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/61093.htm

This is going to be my first Porsche coming from a TVR. It is a long way for me to travel, so don't really want to be disappointed when I get there. Any advise or help anyone can give me would be much appreciated.

Regards

Tom

Do you mean the other red low mileage 1986 standard Turbo. I have seen it but that's to expensive, it looks very nice and I don't live to far away from that one. The one I put the link to, is a lot cheaper than he has advertised it for on PH.

Without the full spec. it is difficult to comment on. Is it still on CIS? 3.6ltr is very odd for a 3.3turbo. He might have used 100mm barrels and a 993 crank, not something I would do personally. Get us the full (detailed spec) and we'll be able to comment further.

Is it realistic that the NOS kit has been fitted and never used? If I went to the trouble I would have certainly used it.

Not to shore if it's still running on CIS, I'll ask and get the full spec of the engine tonight. But I did read somewhere that it has a 7th injector installed. Then saw somewhere else, that it isn't the best way of increasing fuelling. If it's running CIS is this a way of increasing the fuelling. I presume that it's a bad idea to run CIS on highly modified engine. Sorry if I'm getting the wrong end of the stick. But I'm new to the world of Porsche mechanics. Should I not touch it with a barge pole, if it's still on CIS. Oh and what would be the best way of correctly fuelling and would it be ££££ to install? Thanks

It's a bit strange that he's not used the NOS, but fitted it? I would be taking that off straght away. I've never liked the idea of NOS. I first saw the car on Ebay and had a look at his past feedback. It looks like he hasn't had it installed for long. I think he brought the last bit for the kit a month or two ago.

I would certainly want to see some serious evidence behind the work done and the performance claims.

Also strongly recommend taking UV up on his offer, since he actually has a highly modified 3.3 turbo.

However, assuming it is all kosher I'm not quite sure why you would buy a car like that and then detune it? Why not start with a more standard car?

These cars are mechanically fuel injected. Not great but it's ok, and heavily used in many cars of this period. CIS is the 'version' of this injection system. A fully optimised CIS setup can only support ~400bhp. You can modifiy the CIS to cope with approx. 450bhp. After that the engine runs lean and it's all over. Using a 7th inhjector is a cheap and crude way of adding more fuel. You have no way to know if the fuel is being equally distributed to all cylinders. It sounds like it is/was a show car for the company. Nothing wrong with that if you like the car, but really need the specs. to know whats, what. Also dyno sheets with Lambda would be useful.

Its been on and off ebay for a while now. Last seen at 18k taking bids then it dropped of the listings. Personally I dont like it. Too much bling for my liking. But each to his own...

I'd recommend the immaculate standard 1986 Turbo 3.3 for 23k, if you can stretch to it.

A modified W reg (last time around) example isn't the wisest choice for a variety of reasons, even if it looks as lovely as it does. I'd worry about NoS on a car; it's a cheap way to get more power (and a new engine if not installed correctly). Like stone cladding is a cheap way to make your car look like a cotswold cottage.

Thanks for all the comments everybody.

Tertius: UV certainly seem to be the man who knows his stuff when it comes to 930 turbo Porsche's and I'm all ears. The reason I'm looking at detuning the car is to get to grips with the car. I'm not one to jump in at the deep end and then learn to swim straight away. I like to be able to get to grips with things first and then improve things from there. I may feel at some stage I want to up the Bhp and if I've got the supporting engine modifications it's going to be a lot easier to progress up the Bhp ladder.

Just had a chat with the guy on the phone. I asked him a few questions and he seems to know what he's talking about. I've asked him to send over all the details on the engine so should hopefully have that by tonight. I may go and have a look at it tomorrow so that should give me an idea on what I'm going to buy.

This car is potentially a risk for sure; as you know someone has been monkeying around with the internals and interior etc. Now, it may well have been done to a good standard, and if everything checks out and you like the car then fair enough. However, it is rare that people spend the sort of money necessary to do those jobs correctly, thats before you get to whether you like the look of it or not.

Get the specs. post them, and then i'll give you a host of questions to ask/get checked out. Whether you choose this car or a 'perfect' unmolested car, get a professional check (inc. leak down) + rolling road done.

I wouldnt take the risk. 930's are great cars if they have not been fettled with. I would like the others suggest on here look elsewhere as you may see some pretty expensive bills heading your way. The insurance on that will be massive. My old 930 cost £230 to insure (classic)in comparison. There are some really nice looking 930's for sale on here that are original and a lot of the time the prices can be discussed. My old one is actually for sale on here and I reckon the owner would take £19.5 for it and its a fantastic car. Its a red 83 with about 64K miles and a history file to die for. Good luck with your search.

That one is still my favorite I have ever owned so always happy to talk about it Al. Looks like you have been a bit busy in your search from the other thread. Finding the right car is almost a full time job.
