Some Numpty Took a Chunk of Paint out of My Bonnet

Had the bonnet of my chim resprayed a few months ago and an idiot must have reversed into it, it has take a 5 pence peice sized flake of paint off the leading edge of the bonnet.

This is my first Tiv and I was wondering:

A) Even though it is fibre glass will i have to do anything to protect it until I can get it sorted?

B) Is there any way of getting it fixed without a full respray.

Should by easy enough to do. Might even be worth getting in touch with some of them chips-away style folks and let them have a look. Some good reports of repairs with these folks, but as they're all franchises I guess the quality will vary from operator to operator. And of course, a kosher bodyshop should be able to do just the damaged area.

Depends who you believe. Apparently bare fibre glass can soak up water then it all steams out again under the paint and makes lovely blisters. Completely unavoidable apparently.

Did I once read that one should rub a scratch (on a metal car) with candle wax to seal it until the repair?

Would that work with GRP? Is it even a good idea in the first place? (not that I keep a candle handy, anyway)

As long as you haven't broken through the gel coat to the fibreglass, it'll be fine. If you can see fibres, protect it from water until you get it fixed.

Any moisture getting into the grp would have be down to crap layup (conditions and fabrication) and poor resin impregnation, however it would be obvious from the finished article that it was very sub-standard.

Given the amount of water a car is exposed to it certainly shouldn't occur if made properly as it would have to get through the gel coat too. If the gel coat was that poor then you would see the finish immediately.

A similar things often happens in older frp boats & you get osmosis.
