What should I be ale to get for this kinda money?

Any particular make I should be looking at?

Want to do sports photography and cars (obviously) ie anything moving ... have currently got an old Sony DS9 (?) Cybershot which is Ok for headshots/family etc but the focus is shite (ie you have to wait for it to focus before taking). Looking for something a bit better ... can I achieve this within budget?

Anyone got anything around this level?

Any ideas appreciated.

Not with lenses they won't.

D50 / Dynax 5D / EOS300. EOS350 will be slightly over budget with a good lens but is a bit better.

Just noticed Microglobe have the D50, with 18-55, for £539! You can pick up the 70-300 G lens for sub-£100 most places now (including Microglobe themselves, £89!), that's not far off your budget.

Take a look here

Hope this helps.

My D70 was £594 brand new (from Jessops when they used to pricematch) inc the 18-70 ED lens.

Reflash the operating system to the D70s version, and Bob's your mothers brother...

D70 is not available anywhere for love nor money, whilst D70s is a bit over budget if £600 is your limit.

If you are really limited to £600 then you are pretty much "stuck" with the Canon 350D. A great camera, so stuck isn't really the right word - the only question mark is over it's dimunitive size which has put off a lot of people.

If you can spend a bit more, you can get a Nikon D70s, but for the pretty much the same money you can get a Canon 20D - as they have £100 cashback at the moment.

I've got a Nikon and love it but have to say that lens choice would make me swing towards the Canon.

Warehouseexpress has 20D with a lens for £799. I know it's over budget, but (I'm paraphrasing someone from another photography thread a week or so ago) in six months time the money will be forgotten, but the quality of the camera will not.

Just to hijack, what are the advantages of the 20D over the 350D? Other than body size.

And is the 20D as easy/intuitive to use as the 300D? (Which i have used, I am guessing the 350D is the same) Reason I ask is I'm a rank amateur who hates RTFM!

The 20d is more intuitive and easy to use than the 350d, easier/more intuitive ways to set things like ISO etc.

20d shoots faster, 5fps rather than 3fps.
20d is a metal body, not tough plastic, bigger too.
20d has a better focusing system, quicker and better in low light.
20d has the LCD display on top wather than at the back.
20d also has a more robust mirror setup, 100k shots instead of 50k shots.

I went for the 350d as I only liked the 20d's autofocus bit better, I wanted smaller/lighter.

Thanks Rob...might consider it then as the 350D is borderline too small for me...would consider 100 quid on the battery pack to bring it to a sensible size.

...but damn, I'm starting to think about TOO much money!!!

Battery pack on the 300d is nice, helps portrait shooting too. batteries on their own take ~600shots so 2 in the pack are good for 1200 or so.
