Im thinking about Volunteering for a few hours a week for the Police, just to see what it its like and maybe one day it could develop into a new career for me. I just want a few questions answered from anyone who has done this before, or a Police Officer who can help with the questions. thanks in advance.

If i don't like it can i leave when i like?

Do i have to do the same job everytime, or can i get experience from different aspects of the police?

How are volunteers treated in Police stations, for example like normal officers, or always needing special attention and supervision becaus ethey are volunteers?

Thanks, i will try to think of more questions but in the meantime any help is appriciated

I've worked alongside the police filming them, it seems like a really good job in some respects. It'll certainly open your eyes to the seedy side of life.

For instance, how many people do you know who leave dog sh1t on their stairs?

Policemen leave dog plop on their stairs...?

Is this some kind of superstitious ritual......?

Just ask to accompany a friendly BiB on here for a few hours. You will soon get a flavour for it.

In my opinion, Specials get treated like a hindrance by the regulars and in most cases they are. You won't get to do anything very interesting as you won't be trusted to do it properly. If you might get your kicks out of wearing a uniform and flashing your 'Special Constable' Deputy Doofus badge off to friends then sign up, its definitely for you!

You could always join as a regular and just leave if you don't like it. You get paid whilst you train.

Best of luck!

Ah, sorry about that. It's the Met in London that I had in mind. Have you tried neighbouring forces or considered moving down to the land of limp wristed shandy drinkers?

Seriously, the Met are generally desperate for recruits due to the high number of Officers jacking it in or transferring out to their home force after the 2 year probationary period.

Call in at your local Plod shop (ssokay they won't eat you) and make an appointment to have a session with the Specials Recruiting Officer and he may well arrange an accompanied 4 hours to get the feel of the job.

Or dare I say it CSO...

Use either if you like it as a stepping stone to be a regular if you like what you see.

The WPC at Bradford who laid her life down for us started as a CSO and moved on.
