I know this is completly off topic but I know that there are a lot of animal lovers in PH land.
Our family Dobermann, Holly, was put down tonight after 13 years of love and fun with my family. Unfortunatly I wasn't able to say goodbye as my family live in Yeovil, Somerset, but I know that she has had a good run, and is now out of pain after all of the associated illness etc that the older generation dogs get.
Now, with it being xmas soon, and the fact that my mum brought Holly home nearly 14 years ago on the 24th of December (hence the name Holly), I suggested it to my mum that she consider another puppy (Holly always was our puppy) for Xmas. My girlfriend is a Vet, and we can certainly travel. But the question I put to you all is:
Where do we start looking for puppies? RSPCA? PDSA? Council? or do we need to look for certified people?
Can you help me? - We need another puppy to cuddle, besides Casper, our other (5 year old puppy) needs a friend. He's lonely...

I would have to suggest the NCDL - you can get most breeds there and loads of luverly mongrels - and they are there becuase other people don't want them, can't think of a better excuse for having another dog. Also they have been "done" and I beleive they are chipped and diesese free (I can't vouch for any of that but I believe it to be true).
I would also consider giving a home to a slightly older dog than a puppy (if this is an option) - because puppies are very easy to home in comparison to a 3 year old e.g

sorry to hear the bad news.
From what i know, which isnt much, i would say depends what sort of dog you are wanting. We wanted a german shepard - pure breed. And had to get it from a breader. You can get puppies from RSPV (is it?) that have been abandoned and these will be free. But i dont know what the choice is and vet bills may be high but it may be seen as the kinder thing to do as you would be saving it.

Sad to here about the lose, dogs soon become a very large part of the family and it's especially hard to have to part.

I also am completely sloppy about dogs (something about 'the more I know people, the more I like dogs' isn't it?). I still miss Ethel, who died 2 years ago. I'd say don't rush, you need time to let Holly go - she was your companion, and can't just be replaced by another puppy. Why not wait a few weeks, when all the Christmas rejects will be looking for good homes?

We've always been feline oriented, but living close to the main road we've lost a couple and I know it's horrible.
I'd be surpised if you can find a shelter to home a dog with you this time of year, but there's no reason not to go and have a look. Leave some time to have your goodbyes first though, one last christmas....

Sorry to hear about your loss. I love all animals - usually more than people. I have never had a puppy or a kitten - always had rescue cats/dogs. Must admit although it sounds harsh, getting another does help the grieving process also if you are off over Christmas being around will help the dog to settle in.

Not true - I had my cat put to sleep when she got ill at 18 years old - she had been with me for 12 years and I was distraught.

Neil, so sorry to hear about the loss of Holly. Dogs are members of the family, aren't they?
I have to echo the sentiments about the NCDL. They never put a healthy dog down, and if you adopt any dog with medical problems, they foot the bill for medication, etc. to make sure the dog has a good life. I sponsor a couple of their dogs, it's well worth doing.

Sorry to hear of your loss Neil, know exactly what it's like, lost a Springer years ago it was one of the worst moments of my life. My girlfriend has a 6 year old Springer and I am dreading the day in years to come when it has to go 'cos it really is the love of her life and been with her through thick & thin Have to agree completely with Rudegirl, get a cast off after Christmas or if you want a specific breed, go to a specific breed rescue service. I know there is a one for Springers on the web.
Dennis the Menaces pups could be an answer if you fancy losing your slippers/gloves/furniture full of boundless energy (sorry Dennis)

She was a grumpy old sod, but she always came and grabbed your arm to say hello when you walked through the door.
The NCDL sounds like a fantastic idea, as my parents are not too well off (the other four horses and one other dog sees to that - the words shoe and string come to mind) and the comfort of knowing that they have well checked out would be a massive bonus.
Can anyone tell me how I can post a picture of her. I haven't got anywhere to host it though...
