Has anyone got this yet?

I am still playing the original Rome Total War and I am finding it increasingly easy.

Even playing it on the hardest difficulty setting it still has a limited challenge.

I have heard the expansion game is harder?

I've got it and found it ended incredibly quickly. It is harder as it's a real nightmare to completely destroy a barbarian faction as when their last city is taken, they become nomadic with several thousand troops to find a new home.

much, much better than Rome Total War.

Get it and:

If you like big battles - play as Eastern Empire for a great game (huge armies asail your empire from pretty much the start).
If you like city management & surpression of rebelion - play as the Western Empire (pretty much all settlements are in rebelion at the start of the game)

Improvemnets are (as far as I can see)
- More battles
- Generals don't get stars so quickly (could really ruin the first game to my mind)
- Not so many suicide enemy generals (that used to leave a demoralised side)
- More great units (e.g. rome v steppe barbarians)
- Rome Total War also patched to fix the gaining stars to quickly & suicide generals (to a degree)

Still some dodgy IA at times though but overall a good improvement on an already great game

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been totally addicted to Rome! It should come with a health warning! lol Never played a game in this genre before, I too was thinking about getting Barbarian Invasion, are there any more historical battles added, in the single player mode?

I was addicted to this game, now I can barely get through a battle without my graphics card doing its 'crazy polygons' routine and making it unplayable (not gaoing to get a new graphics card until I get a new PC as I'll be wanting a PCI-e card)

If you think Total War is addictive, download and install the Total Realism mod, something like 3 times the amount of provinces to conquer! Plus the barbarians aren't crap!

I'll give Barbarian Invasion another go, but the one time I played another faction won without me really doing that much, is there a way to turn off the victory conditions?

It is very good, probably the best in the Total War series though not without it's flaws.

The biggest anoyance for me is the rebels that crop up all the time, you can't leave them alone because they block trade routes but fighting them all the time makes the game sooo long.

Yes, you're right about the rebels, they are a pain, I noticed one rebel ship blockading my city of Sparta, for no apparent reason! I feel so silly, but I spent 4 hours on it last night! But I did take all of the Eqyptian cities, I kept saying to myself, 'one more turn, and thats it', and so it went on........

I too am an adict... I know the 'one more turn' situation all too well. I have even found myself doodling troop strategies whilst at work....

Chris - Historical Battles - yes, it does have a few, but not that many as I recal. They do however including a cool night time battle (with flaming torches) set in Britain.

Night time battles are the other addition to the Barbarian Expansion pack.

Off topic slightly, I also have Medieval – Total War with Viking invasion exp. pack, which I have never loaded on my PC, is that almost as good as Rome?

(Have just ordered the Barbarian Invasion exp. Pack off Amazon, btw! )

Medieval Total War is from the previous 'generation' of Total War games, the graphics are not so advanced, but the units are more controllable in battle. Each province has a fixed location for battles with a bordering province so it is more repetitive.
Also there is far less variety in troop types.

It is still a very good game though and well worth playing.

Thanks for that , I'll load that onto my PC after Rome, although my wife won't be happy, she has become a Rome widow!

It's an expansion made by some people online, but it does 'take over' your installation of Rome so don't install it until after you've finished your current game!

Medievil Total War is well worth playing, especially for the Viking Invasion games which you can complete in an afternoon

Thanks Nige, so apart from adding more provinces to conquer(which would be a bit more realistic since the Rome Map doesn't even cover all of the Empire of Alexander the Great) what else does it do?

Do you guys also know how to edit the player file to allow you to play as any faction (even the Vatican - although playing as them can crash the game because of a conflict in issuing Vatican orders I think) by editing the campaign_descriptions.txt file.

Loads of new units, especially for the Barbarian races. Also you get to train units native to the provinces you've conquered (for example, if you conqueor one of the Greek provinces after you build a couple of new buildings you're allowed to train Hopolites).

New races.

That's about it I think...

Province map (note some of the old provinces have been split a bit)
