What is a United Staes Trade Dollar?

My wife bought something on ebay that came from Hong Kong.
They had also included a silver coin which is an inch and a half in diameter. On one side it has written United States of America at the top and Trade dollar at the bottom. It has an Eagle with some Arrows in one claw and some grain in the other. Also written is 420 grains 900fine.
On the other side is what looks like Brittania sitting on a wall (I think) and it's dated 1872.
What is this coin and why would they have included it?
