The area near the Central Station along the canal is quite well interesting.

Stayed in a floating hotel in Amsterdam called - wait for it "The Boatel".!!!

Went for a stag weekend and have to say that this is one place to be avoided at all costs.!!!

I know you're looking for recommendations for a good hotel, but this is advice worth noting

One plus point was the TV - some VERY interesting channels available...........

the canal house hotel is superb if you get a canal facing room.
It's on Prinzengracht IIRC, about 20 mins from the station

www.hotel-prinshendrik.nl/

Unbeatable value for a stag weekend, literally 1 minute across the road walk from central station.

Stayed there 2 years ago, booked for May this year too.

ETA: I'm sure its great for non-stag do's too.

I have stayed at the "Cok City Hotel" ( correct spelling ) - for a lads weekend , a nice , modern hotel easy walking from the train station and also very close to the Red Light district ( but not right in it ).

IIRC we spent every night in a really good Blues club ( "Bourbon Street" ?)

Bourbon Street is great - and bring your guitar for a jamsession! Good and cheap and fast Indonesian food around the corner at Bojo's . . .

Best value 'nice' hotels in Amsterdam are those in th NH chain

www.nh-hotels.com

the City Centre hotel is an ex-warehouse with very large rooms and close to the centre (about a 15 mins walk from Central Station)

I stayed in 'hotel old quater' - nice 'n' cheap, and right in the middle of things. They had some good jazz bands on downstairs too!

Depending on your budget.

The Winston if you can get a room, it is quite literally a work of art.

www.winston.nl

At the other end of the scale, the Lennon suite at the Amsterdam Hilton...
