Linksys Power supply
Discussion
can anyone tell me if this should work i have a linksys wireless router that was supplied with the wrong power supply the connector doesn't fit i am wating for a replacement but what to get the thing up and running
the unit they sent is output 12V 1000ma
the sticker on the back of the router states power 5v 2.0a
(which suggest to me the power supply the sent is totally wrong)
i have a unit that states 9v dc 1.5a which fits and powers it up
if i remember the Amps shouldn't make any difference as it draws what it need (i may be wrong)
but would an oversupply of volts cause a problem ?

You are taking a risk supplying the thing with nearly twice the voltage it expects. The external power supplies are cheap and cheerful, so it is quite likely that the router has its own voltage regulator designed to drop the 5VDC it is expecting from the external power supply down to something like 3.5V for the router's internal electronics. That regulator is probably quite capable of dropping the 9VDC you're currently feeding it down to whatever is needed internally, but it may overheat in doing so and either cut out or burn out.
I couldn't tell you exactly what to do but...
I bought a Linksys router from the US a couple of years back. I rang the factory at the time to try and buy a UK adapter from the factory which was 15 miles away from where we were staying in LA. They didn't have one so I brought it back and bought a transformer matching the input spec given on the router from RS components. I just soldered the old connector onto the new transformer and robert is your mother's brother. It's been fine ever since.
Yes, soldering the wires together was a little pikey but it does the job.
