Boxster Roof Problem

I've acquired a friends car to sell for him. I'm picking up tomorrow, but apparently it has a problem with the roof. The usual happens when you hit the button (windows down etc) but the roof itself stay fimly put. Could be anything....
Does anyone have any pointers on where I should look etc, before I spend money on the thing......

haven't done anything yet - waiting for the car to be dropped off - Usual stitch up by a mate, leaving the country and wants his car sold 
I'm hoping it'll be something simple like a solenoid or suchlike.... Just needed to know if these have an inherent problem - thanks for the replies - keep 'em coming....

Need some more help here - As I've said, I've checked the fuses - all OK....I've tried a new Relay - no diference.
As I said, the H'brake light works, and the windows lower a little, which would indicate that the micro switches are OK.
I'm thinking it may be the main motor, but do not know how to get at it with the roof in the up position - If I could get to this, then I could see whether power is getting to the motor.....
Any advice on getting access, getting roof down etc would be very appreciated......

Do you have access to the handbook? There is a tool in the toolkit for manually operating the roof but I'm not sure of the procedure. It MAY be a get her back up only operation, but as I said, I'm not sure. It's explained in the manual.
yeah definitely a section in the handbook about how to move the hood unassisted by power. You will find the correct tools behind the spare wheel in the front trunk.
I presume the roof latch (hook) is completely out of its window frame secure point otherwise it won't move...it should be as the windows went down.

on my old 3.2 cab I left it in the garage roof down for a few weeks which caused the control unit to pack up causing exactly the fault you describe on the Boxster. Cost about £1000 to fix by the way! Anyway, might be worth finding out if Boxsters are prone to the same problem and if your mate has stored it roof down for any length of time.
