help get my girlfriend off my back

my 6 month old purchase of a griff 500 has been nothing but a pleasure apart from one thing - the constant whingeing from my girlfriend about the range of smells in the cabin (most of these seem to emanate from the car others are admittedly my fault).

One source of odour has been water ingress and i've pretty much put a stop to it by using a car cover.

There is another smell that i can't put my finger on but i think it has to be from the engine. It's a sour, acrid smell, and there is no difference if the heating is on or off. I notice it more when driving in town, mostly, but i can't identify much of a pattern. Could it be something leaking onto a hot part of the engine?

Have you checked the batterybox in the passenger footwell?

Try an air freshener... or just more use of the loud pedal... (you won't hear the complaints then)

It sounds like cooking fibre glass and yes “they all do that sir”.

It’s the seams that are not covered by the heat shield and run along the exhaust manifolds. I stopped the smell in mine by covering these with aluminium foil wrapped in multiple layers and held in place with silicon sealant, if your careful you can make it look quite neat, but it only lasts about a year or so then again its cheap to replace.

both mine had a similar smell - somewhere between an old rabbit hutch and catpiss. i tried several 'fresheners' - which had the effect of making it smell like vanilla/apple/citrus/sunflower catpiss.

YOu can sometimes get exhaust fumes in the cabin if you drive with the windows partially open, could this be it?

Have a Vindaloo the night before you take her out in the Griffith and she wont notice the smell of pee

Battery acid? I hope not. Stick your head in the passenger footwell and see if it's stronger down there - but if it is, careful what you touch as even a trace of acid can put a hole in your clothes. Whatever it is, it might be worse about town becasue there's less air movement through the cabin.

A sour acrid smell you say? Could that be coolant burning off the manifold or cats’? Does it use any water? The usual smell for a TVR is a potent mix of glass-fibre resin/leather and glue! Ummm Wonderful – think I’ll just go and sit in mine for a while Rich...
