why cant i add new cpus to the wireless network. please help
Discussion
hey all,
thank you very much for trying to help me. i think i have a basic problem that should be easy to fix but i am just being a bit slow today (quite a big event last night!). anyway, i will try and describe it as best i can:
i have a netgear wireless router (DG834GT) and some of the corresponding USB wireless adapters. with the old computers the network was fine but my house was broken into and the two laptops were stolen so they have been replaced with new desktops but i can get them to work properly with the network.
when trying to access the network with the USB adapters it says that it is connected but with limited or no access and the internet doesnt work.
when i take out the USB adapter and plug the router into the modem port it works fine, but unfortunately both of the computers are displaying this problem so i need to get one of them to work wirelessly. because of this i believe it is probably a very simple thing that i have not done when setting them up, so i will try and state what i did when trying to set it up:
plug in and install USB adaptor entering the SSID and WEP key correctly
go to wireless netwrok connections and TCP/IP properties and tell it to obtain IP automatically
try and connect but after it says acquiring network address" (i think) it says connected but with limited or no access.
i have compared all possible settings with this computer which is also runnning on the wireless network but i can see any differences.
the only things i can think of are:
do i need to tell the router to allow these new machines to connect?
is it a windows protection setting?
sorry for the long post, and thank you again for your efforts.

go into the router setup and switch encryption off, then try to connect wirelessly - if this works then the problem is with the type of encryption or incorrect passphrase...try and get it working without encryption first.
If it still dosent work id check the USb adapters are installed properly
Are you using the windows XP wireless utility or the Netgear supplied one? Have you got the latest drivers for the USB adapters off the Netgear website?

thank you for those ideas. i will try that all out tomoro morning and hope for it to work. but i have realised that if i really cant get it to work then i can actually run both computers off the router if i get a long router to cpu cable as it has 4 cpu ports (i am assuming i can run more than 1 cpu, maybe they are just for printers etc). but that does slightly destroy the idea and point of having a wireless router.

You didn't mention (unless I missed it) whether you had set up suitable shares on the new machines.
I have a similar problem trying to get 2 XP machines to see each other. Both see and use the wireless router (Belkin) but the original one simply does not see the new one on the network. The new one can sort of see the old one but not access anything which I think is a local firewall problem, at least in part, though I am fairly sure the obvious firewall is disabled - maybe there is a second one running somewhere on that machine.
The system is elsewhere so I can't just play for a few minutes when an idea occurs to me so I am trying to make a list of things to look at carefully next time an opportunity arises. Fortunately all we need to do is transfer a chunk of files from one to the other so a good old jump drive will suffice if all else fails!
So, any headline suggestions anyone? Other than re-checking with some care the settings that already exist of course!

One other thing - might be obvious, but have you tried switching the router off and back on again?
Sometimes I find they can stop giving out DHCP requests...
The DG834 can be a bit prone to this.
I've had mine about 2 months now and have only had to do this once, but suffice to say I released my IP address and it wouldn't renew it. Switch it off and on, only takes about 2-3 mins to reboot.

Make sure you've not got MAC address control enabled on the router. They're connecting OK ,but the router isn't giving them a network address.
This could be your problem. I'm not sure whether the USB wireless dongle has the mac address or whether it's taken from the laptop, but if you are using filter by mac address, and it's taken from the laptop, they'll have new mac addresses and not be in your filter list. As suggested, turn of mac address filtering to check and if it then all works, add them in to the filter list and reenable.

EDIT: i have just found this out from the netgear help!

Chris, do you want me to pop round and take a look for you?
Neil
Check that you dont have any values put in the default gateway of the network adapter that could be overiding the one from the DHCP server...
As when it comes up and states that it is connected but with limited connectivity,i find that i can get access to other machines on the network but i am unable to get online..

this might be a good idea as i think i may have just changed something on the router and it now doesnt want to connect at all. i am conencted now through a normal modem to write this.
what i tried to do was reset it all and start from scratch by creating a new wireless network and then i tried to use a different cpu to set up a new network but it wont connect at all and wont work on other computers either. i really should learn to just leave things alone!
i will email you....
