Holden will begin fitting a new 6.0-litre V8 to the VZ Commodore range when production resumes for the year. This engine was not supposed to be released until the all-new VE Commodore. However, rather than waste time and money updating the current 5.7-litre V8 to meet new emissions regulations which come into effect in Australia from January 1, 2006, Holden elected to bring the 6.0-litre forward.

It is not the same 6.0-litre V8 fitted to the HSV range. That 6.0-litre engine, code-named LS2, is sourced from Corvette. Holden's 6.0-litre engine, code-named L76, was developed primarily for General Motors' truck range in the US and is less powerful than the HSV version (Holden: 260kW, HSV: 297kW).

The Holden 6.0-litre will be available in the Berlina, Calais, SV8, SS, Statesman, Caprice, SS ute, Crewman SS and Cross8. Significantly, even though it has been engineered for use in an all-wheel-drive model (the Cross8 ute), Holden has elected to discontinue the V8 version of the Adventra.

Holden brought the introduction of the Statesman forward two years because of strong export demand (more than 80 per cent of local production is exported to the Middle East) and it is a highly profitable model. The VE wagon and ute are not due until late 2007; the Monaro may follow in 2008.

HSV's Monaro-based GTO Coupe will continue until about August, when production of it and the US Pontiac GTO will end to make room on the production line for the all-new Commodore.

HSV versions of the VE Commodore and Statesman (the Clubsport, Senator and Grange) will go on sale between one and two months after the Holden versions. HSV is expected to unleash more power from the LS2 6.0-litre V8; the current version of that engine has a standard air intake and standard exhaust manifolds. By making this engine breathe better, HSV will be able to find more power. If history repeats, there will be a modest power increase (from the current 297kW to, say, 300kW or 305kW), leaving the company room for improvement on future models. Spy photos show VE prototypes with four exhausts, similar to a Mercedes AMG or BMW M Series.
