Just as a comparison my first weekly wage (in hand) when I joined was the princely sum of:

Eleven pounds sterling. (Circ. 1957).

Those joining now get more than I did on retirement (circ. 1987).

Is there a little corner on this site I can set up a begging bowl.....

I live in Dorset so pay will probably be different. How many hours in a standard officers week?

I live in Thames Valley Police area which has a problem with retaining officers.

They can get free travel to work and an extra £4K if they join the Met. from what I keep reading in local paper.

So what is happening here is the Police numbers never increase, as new recruits, once qualified, then transfer to the Met for more cash.

If you're interested in joining up, Jane's Police Review is quite handy. My girlfriend used it when thinking of applying and still reads it now.

See here.

No thats my standard pay. The figures you quote are about 6,000 less than what i was getting, hence about the same as the LWA.

Thames Valley may lose Officers to the Met but the Met has a significant problem with experienced Officers transferring to the County Forces. I would guess that the huge numbers going through Hendon training is helping all forces.

We have temporarily frozen recruitment until further notice due to the high calibre of applications received. Surrey Police would however welcome interest from the following under-represented groups: Ethnic Minorities, Gay, Lesbian and Disabled.

Whatever happened to the 'best person for the job', and ensuring the public are looked after, instead of meeting absurd, ridiculous and quite frankly irrelevant governmental PC targets

As an aside - does being Irish count as an Ethnic Minority?

Is that quote for real? What a contradictory statement!

They haven't frozen recruitment at all! You just have to fit their prejudiced recruitment criteria. White hetrosexual = no vacancies, Asian homosexual = please come for an interview. One of us is racist/biased/prejudiced and it isn't me!

I am a Met officer and I certainly don't get £6,000 London weighting - I get £1995.

Are you adding together all of the possible allowances - There is also £1011 London Allowance but this and the London weighting only add up to £3006 .....

Or are you including the 'new' housing allowance as well? I don't get it having joined under the 'old' system so have no idea how much it is ......
