Installing ADSL wireless router tonight
Discussion
Just got it this morning - a Netgear DG834PN MIMO wireless router.
I've never done this before and have no experience of a wireless network. Does anyone have any special tips in setting this up other than just read the instructions? I'm more worried about losing my internet connection or screwing up my pcs.
I'm currently running xp home on my desktop pc and laptop, connecting to Pipex with an Alcatel USB ADSL modem. I've only just bought the laptop so I haven't connected to the internet on that yet (or installed virus checker / firewall / Firefox / Adaware etc).

If you havent got any anti-virus on the lappy, you can get a free one from http://free.grisoft.com
Don't bother with wacky add-in software firewalls if you're allready behind a router. XP firewall maybe if you go to public internet caffe's or whatever with it...
And finally, make sure the netgear instructions include setting up some wireless security.
Good luck

Good advice from chumpers on this wireless security thread
Setting it up is easy, getting the security to work takes a bit more effort and figuring out but worthwhile.

completely uninstall the USB modem first, and set Internet Explorer to connect via a LAN
make sure you have your ADSL account username and password to hand - you will need to put it in the router
if using a wireless adapter in the PC rather than wired then install the software first then the adapter
Dont configure the router wirelessly - get it up and running via cable first.
Follow the Quick install guide instructions in the box and use the CD-rom supplied - theres an easy install wizard on it
give us a shout if you get stuck...I work for Netgear

Well I'm up and running, linking to my ISP and setting up wireless was a doddle took about 10 mins including installing the network card, however I'm having a bit more trouble with security and the connection seems a bit slow but it's early days.
I'm writing this from my kitchen so can't be all bad!!
Thanks for the help so far, I'll try more tomorrow.

I expect you'll find that you can keep using your old dial-up mail account as long as you change the account to send mail via your broadband supplier's outgoing (SMTP) mail server. But the dial-up account will probably stop working after a few months unless you dial up from time to time to keep it live.

Software firewalls have the benefit of being able to control software accessing the internet on your machine, i would highly recommend you install one, there are plenty of free ones out there.
