If you have digital tv, apparently essential. But, buying at a price means it probably won't have it.

2 main aspects to HD, resolution (number of pixels on screen) and digital connectivity.

2 main HD resolutions for the UK 720p (1280x720 pixels) and 1080p (1920x1080 pixels). Most 'HD ready' screens can scale a image from an HD source to meet the panels internal resolution. To be HD ready the resolution of the smallest aspect needs to be at least 720 pixels. Common resolutions for HD ready LCDs will be 1280x720 or 1366x768 - Sky HD is expected to broadcast at 1280x720 initially at least. PS3 is expected to play up to 1080p, although the only LCD TV I know that is native 1080 is a 45" Sharp that costs about £4-4.5k

Connectivity: for HD you need at least 1 digital input - the two main ones are HDMI and DVI - for true HD these connections need to be able to handle HDCP encryption (future copyright protection - I think).

For 20" TVs, I would also check

BTW - HD has nothing to do with Digital TV. Digital TV or iDTV, Freeview usually means a digital tuner in the TV, as opposed to the usual analog tuner. Digital TV is not broadcast in HD, but BBC are planning to do HD freeview trials in the summer, but I think it will require a dedicated tuner box for the trial

Yep, got it in one. I always buy from them and recommend them. Their staff actually know what they are talking about too.

Ahhh.. I was thinking Sky. They start with the world cup do they not? didn't know another box would be required.

Well, yes Sky is launching its HD service around April... I don't think any TV will have any Sky HD tuners built-in. The Sky HD box is expected to have hdmi connections. You can get cables that are hdmi one end, DVI the other for those (majority) of smaller LCD TVs that have only one DVI input. But you do need to make sure that the DVI or HDMI connection on a TV is HDCP compatible to be future proof.

World Cup on SKY? God, I hope so. I bought my HDTV before Christmas, and I know Currys and Comet staff are using that to sell the TVs, but, I belive BBC has the license to broadcast the games live. BBC, as far as I know, have not signed up with SKY to broadcast in HD over their infrastructure yet. I really hope some sort of deal is worked out in time...
