Mercedes Cosworth 2.5 16v Help !!!

I have been offered a 190E Cossie 2.5 as a private sale. The car is a 1989 manual in armadine red, half leather and in totally standard condition. Genuine 98k with FSH (mostly MB and the rest at MB specialist)with 5 owners. Condition really is excellent inside and out and I am very close to fronting the money to buy it!
Is there any one out there who is brave enough to suggest some realistic values on such a vehicle and can think of any reasons for me not to go for it?? I need it as a stop-gap before I take the plunge and go for a 964 later in the year but don't want to loose too much money in the process!!

If it really has no rust and the mileage is to be believed I reckon £4000 to £4500 as a private sale. A lot of the press is promoting the car as a possible classic so good one's may hold this price for a few years. However, there is only a small hardcore following and you may find it takes a while to find a buyer later on. Plus Almandine was always the least popular colour choice - not sporty enough. You might see a few advertised at over £5k, but they don't sell....good luck.
Thanks for the advice. I think you have pretty much confirmed my own thoughts. I agree that there only appears to be a limited following for this model which surprises me when you consider that it is a bit of a special car. Considering what I could end up paying for it I think I would be mad to turn it down regardless of the colour. I am experienced enough to know what I am looking at and all the indications up to now lead me to believe this is not a pup. I'll do all the usual checks and see if I can strike a deal at the weekend!

Tony is about right for a private sale.
Even the really bad ones can look perfectly nice inside (and even out) - you do need to get a bit down and dirty with one of these to really tell its condition. And you really really need to drive it. Starting problems/idle problems are common so don't worry too much about them, but also tedious to trace and few if any people know how to do it properly. But it's still a Mercedes not a Ferrari so you don't need some babied pup that's had its oil changed every 1000 miles or anything. Examples with over 200,000 miles aren't at all uncommon.
If it's as great as it sounds, I would buy it! I even like the red. There are a lot of people asking around for low(ish) mileage nice examples such as this and they will fetch good money. I think the values are on the way up, a lot of the low price ones around are fairly nasty condition-wise.
Let us know if you go ahead; I might know some people who would be interested if not.
And finally, come to www.mercedes190.co.uk where I am an admin. It's very small at the moment and about 30% cossie owners, but we're hoping it will continue to grow.
