... bought a second car and insured it with a different insurance company whilst claiming the same no-claims-bonus as your main car? If so, have you ever then made a successful claim whilst in this state?

I still don't really understand why this can't be done (and where it says it can't be done), so if anyone could explain it to me I'd appreciate it muchly....

You normally have to declare whether you own (and insure) other cars.

That said, it is possible to find insurers who will 'mirror' your full no claims on a second policy.

Direct line do it. Insured my Smart using no claims
bonus which is on the Tuscan insured with Swinton

Direct line also said an accident in one car would not affect no claims on the other car.

Don't you have to send in proof of no claims? And they don't accept photocopies, so unless you get two copies somehow you could be in trouble.

I agree about the mirroring of no claims - a few places offer this and it's worth doing because after a year (AFAIK) the "mirrored" no claims becomes "real" no claims. But using one and the same NCD for two different cars with two different companies sounds a teensy bit fraudulent to me... and if you have an accident in either you'll be in big trouble.

Hmmm having read these comments you have got me wondering! I bought a new car yesterday and insured myself online with Tesco, I put down my 5 years no claims (currently on my other car), it didn't say I wasn't allowed? Anyway have spoken to my insurers (on my original car) and they will send me my no claims certificate once I cancel the policy, I assume therefore I can show this if needs be as proof of my no claims?

I'd double-check this if I were you... I seem to recall several of my insurers in the past saying that you can't have one NCD and two cars on it unless the second policy expressly mirrors the NCD. Some insurers can be quite helpful and offer you a full duplicate NCD for your second car, but from what I've seen on here over the last few months there aren't many of these insurers left....

Edited to add: This business of insuring more than one car has come up a fair bit over the last few months. Might be worth doing a search!

Don't the insurance companies accept renewal requests as proof of no claims bonus? In the past when I've sold a car and insured a new one, I have sent off the renewal notice for my old car as proof of the NCB - I've never been questioned why the two cars are different.

All I'm suggesting is doing the above but without the selling part - the reason I ask is because I want to buy a Griff and insure it, whilst having my 200sx runnable for a few weeks while I try and sell it! Seems a tricky thing to do easily....

Both our cars come up for renewal at the same time
We kept the Tuscan with Swinton as it was cheaper
After phoning round for the Smarts insurance Direct line said they changing their policy regarding 2nd cars
As the Smart is used for shopping and the Tuscan for fun they could match the no claims discount - yes we had to provide proof of no claims on Tuscan which we had anyway, and other details like how long owned
named drivers, drivers details if different to smart

So when you get a "new" NCB, do you call them NCB1 and NCB2? How is this workable? I don't understand!

That's no problem at all. All they want to see is the NCD. The fact that the two cars are different is neither here nor there to them.

Yep. Not only tricky, but it can be expensive! You have to have both cars covered on two separate policies, and if you only have one NCD you'll have to insure the other without an NCD unless you appeal to their better nature (!) and ask for a discount on the basis of your impeccable driving record on your other car. You could always insure the Griff without an NCD and transfer the NCD entitlement once your other car is sold? Might be worth a go...

Don't know whether you could get a short insurance policy of a month or something? Might be worth asking them?

They're two entirely separate entities. You can have one NCD insuring one car with one insurer, and another car with another NCD insured with the same insurer or with a completely different insurer entirely. As long as you have the same number of cars and NCDs, no problem!

I have three cars and three NCDs. It all seems to work somehow! All three policies fall due for renewal at different times, so I don't find it's a hassle at all. If I were to sell one car I'd just keep one proof of NCD until I bought another. If I bought 2 cars to replace it, I'd grovel to my insurers until they mirrored one of my NCDs.

Oh, the other option is to buy a Griff more than 10 years old and put it on a Classic policy. Some companies don't require or give NCDs on "classics"!!

Thanks SGirl - that has cleared things up alot for me.

However.... say I insure the Griff using the Nissan's renewal as proof, I will then have two cars and two NCBs. In the event of a claim would I have to prove how I built each of them up from scratch? I can't see the insurers ever questioning the claim or ever finding out?

But anyhow, advice taken and I'll have to talk nicely to the people at Direct Line....

Thanks again

Each vehicle has to have its own NCD and it cant be split or used twice or anything like that. There are lots of insurers that do offer a full bonus on second car though provided you have good record and the second car is somthing reasonably modest. If you do just claim to have a full bonus though when you get a quote to be honest youre quite likely to get away with it cos most dont ask for proof these days.. but u never heard that from me ok !!

No you won't. You'll have two cars and one NCB being used on both! The renewal notice is proof of your NCD, sure - but if you then allow the first policy to continue running (i.e. renew it) and then use the renewal notice to launch another policy, this is - as I said above - a teensy bit fraudulent and you could find yourself without cover at all...

In the event of a claim would I have to prove how I built each of them up from scratch?

No. I didn't build mine up from scratch! I asked nicely for some kind of consideration of my superb driving record etc. etc. when I bought extra cars.

I can't see the insurers ever questioning the claim or ever finding out?

Have an accident and see how easy it is for them to work it out. Seriously, it's only too easy these days to cross-reference and find out all kinds of things. I wouldn't take the risk if I were you, especially not just for a few weeks while you sell the old car. Honesty is the best policy and all that. Insurers don't need excuses to wriggle out of their obligations to their policyholders as it is, it's best not to give them something to use against you.

Thanks again

You're welcome! Good luck!

Dear Mr Charming..

If you buy a new car and have not sold your own car most insurance cos will give you a months free cover on the old car until you sell it. They will then let you insure it on a monthly basis up to three months, this will cost a few quid.

This is how I'm insuring my Griff, the Cerbera and SAAB are on normal cover, the Griff is still on cover from it's own policy which is now transffered to the Cerbera..Confused?? Call your insurance co.

If you want to keep a second car, ask your broker to get you a deal, most companies will offer to match your existing NCB on another policy.

If I see you tomorrow I'll explain properly..

hi guy's,

got this thread today,

been reading about mirroring,

this is my perdicament.

7years ncb on a 944cab
need a "second" car, 1300 escort estate.

have any 4 claims (in 3 years) on a company car 2 non, 1 vandalism, 1own fault.

now my own compnay cant give me a 2nd car discount.
due to the accident in the company car, despit having 7yeras on the 44. (and with them as well)

so I start from 0, meaning a £300 car insures at £800 ! TP only, thats 100 less than Im paying noe for a fully comp porsche !!!!

so rang aa, who brought it down to £540
also elephant.com had a similar quote

can this mirroring apply to my situation.
ie with direct line as I've read above.

also with mirroring if I have an accident in the 2nd car will it screw up the insurance in the Porsche ??

cheers

Adrian
