The Two Thai Fishermen that mudered Kathrine Horton.
Discussion
Have been sentenced to Death, quick justice and with no appeal, there are a couple of organisations critisizing the speed of their sentence ,but as the Thai Prime Minister has said ,this is damaging to the countries image and he obviously wants to send a clear message out that this sort of crime is not to be tolerated.
What are your views, and do the organisations have a point.

Didn't the mother say that neither she nor Kathrine supported the death sentence and so asked for it to be commuted to life, should the victim/victims relative have a say in the punishment?
Given the forensic evidence, by the sounds of it the conviction was pretty straight forward, unless the 'organisations' are suggesting that somehow the mens sperm was implanted in her body to incriminate the two fishermen?

They've been tried and sentenced. However given the speed with which it's been done and the pressure applied to a police force that perhaps doesnt have a stellar human rights record, one could question as to whether these guys are guilty.
It could well be that they are, however it could well be a case of justice fitting a Terry Pratchett quote, whereby convicting someone of the crime was the goal, if it was the person that commited that specific crime it could be viewed as a happy coincidence.
Having said all that, what I've heard says overwhelming DNA evidence, witnesses placing them in the area as well as confessions, so my cynicism may be misplaced.

They pleaded guilty, so i am suprised at the death sentance. It all seems very political to me.
But the thai legal system is not renowned for its 'fairness'
They have the death sentence for alot of things, from drug smuggling to sex tourists raping Thai children, I guess that they are trying to keep a lid on the dodgy side of the Thai tourist trade. Otherwise no ones going to want to go there on holiday are they?

Did they admit to it?
I think they admitted to it as soon as they were caught, apparently they went of shore as soon as the DNA testing started,so i would imagine that they were DNA tested when they came ashore ,although i have no proof of this.
Woops just seen the above.

not sure i believe they were anything more than unfortunate scapegoats,
There was both DNA evidence and a confession how much more proof do you want?
im sorry but having heard first hand accounts of the thai judicial system im not going to instantly believe what they tell us especially when they are under huge pressure from the west to catch someone
edited to add i dont know the details of the case as i havent really paid much attention to it. just my opinion on thailand's police and politics in general having heard titbits of the case

I met Kath a few times,as she was often round our house as she went to school with one of my housemates who was also from Cardiff.
It is just credit to her how she has been portrayed in the media, she really was a lovely girl.
As far as I am concerned, the death penalty IS far too quick and easy for these Amoebas.

I'm with The Lemming on this one. It isn't always the case that those who "confess" are always guilty.
There are plenty of cases of confessions which have been found to have been obtained by lets say, less than "reasonable" means. In fact, there have even been confessions where an individually willingly confessed and was subsequently found to have nothing to do with the crime. People can act awfully strange at times.

At least in the UK "beyond reasonable doubt" is the yardstick - not "the balance of probabilities".
In fact, in the UK the case would have been abandoned and the men released if the Prime Minister (or any other government official) had stated his wishes for the outcome of the trial - as the Thai PM did.

actually I think they do have right of appeal from what I read today

DNA evidence is by no means as cut and dried as some here would like to believe. On the balance of evidence I'd guess they were guilty , but is the balance of evidence adequate to top someone without appeal? I really don't know.
That may have been the case 2 decades or so ago when it could only narrow it down to, say 2% of the population, but it is very precise now.
