My local Hyper-Chav Michael Carrol (the fat obnoxious b'stard who annoys his neighbours by banger racing in his back garden and snorting cocaine by the skip full) is up in court....again....and this time his legal team have managed to secure him legal aid

He won 9.7 million in 2002......how does this work?......
Legal beagles please put me straight, as my faith in this country is eroded day by day...

Not necessarily. Apparently all people get past stage one ...to enquire to the right..or some bollox...but actually getting it is a dirrerent matter IIRC!!!

A lgal bloke on Telly today said it was highly unlikely he would be granted.

But what do I know!!!

Probably because he has squandered all his winnings, by treating his so called "friends" who, no doubt are now nowhere to be seen..........

Well they do say a fool and his money are soon parted.......

Regarding the legal aid, well the worlds gone mad.........

I seem to remember El Hadji Diouf the Bolton Wanderers player was up in court for gobbing at another player and if he had been found guilty he would have been sacked, he got legal aid and i think they said that if you are in court and you might if found guilty lose your job you can get legal aid so under those circumstances anybody can get it.

I would`nt be at all surprised if i`m completely wrong.

apparently it's automatically awarded, and then claimed back afterwards.

Don't know but I have heard he is down to his last £500,000 plus investments he has made have gone pear shaped because he's kept taking money out and his house because of the state it is in is worth much less than he paid for it.

Give him time (6 months at most) and he'll be broke.

Stupidity is the mechanism by which money is transferred back from the Chav to the Chav Not.

Hey, someone stole my punctuation!

Laptop & fast typing, well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Legal Aid is available for all criminal offences where there is a reasonable likelihood of custody or where there is a complex issue of law.

It is not currently means tested.

In the good old days, it used to be means tested, but the administrative cost of calculating whether the defendant should pay a contribution and the cost of collecting it exceeded the savings and the system was abandoned.

For the last few years, it has simply been awarded to anyone whose case passed the merits test.

In the Magistrates Courts, there is no mechanism for reclaiming any of the defence costs.

In the Crown Court, the Judge has a discretion to order payment of some or all of the defence costs, alongside any order for prosecution costs and the substantive sentence.

Needless to say, the system is unpopular with right thinking taxpayers who cannot comprehend why wealthy scumbags are entitled to free representation.

The Government is considering yet another U Turn and is currently looking at reinstating means testing for Criminal Legal Aid.

As 95% of the villains that I represent are on the Dole, it seems pretty clear that reintroducing means testing will just be a hugely expensive waste of time with no net savings for the taxpayer.

Cheers

A guy on Anglia news said the legal aid was based on income and not capital.

I really hope this gets overturned.

I found a reference to Mr Carroll's upcoming destitution on this page.

More schadenfreude material here.

It's a crying shame. Such a nice boy. Loves his mum, etc.
