Now you all know that (deep heresy though it may be) I am a big fan of OPCs and in particular the Porsche warranty, which has served me very nicely in the last twelve months.

So - I have every intention of renewing it every year until I trade up to a GT3RS [in about 2076 at this rate]

So this announcement from BMW (which has got the BMW forums on FIRE ) leaves me concerned.

CHECK OUT THE PRICE FOR A YEAR's WARRANTY on a 60k mile M3 Coupe. NEARLY TWO F GRAND

I hope against hope that our brethren in Stuttgart don't apply the same policy to the OPC warranty.

Might be few cheap M3 CSLs around I reckon though....... This is going to annihilate the market price of M3s and M5s.

BMW are making changes to their extended warranty for all vehicles as below.

Effective Monday 1st Feb 2006 the Insured Warranty product will change as follows

*There will be two different products, split by mileage band, 0 to 60,000 and 60,001 to 100,000 miles.

*There will be no product available for vehicles that exceed the 100,000 mileage at the time of purchase, however all warranties still retain unlimited mileage cover, so if you renew at 99,999 you are covered for that year.

*A new combined M series and Alpina product will be introduced.

*A customer excess of £100 will be introduced for all products with the exception of M / Alpina and 7 series, where a £250 customer excess will be applied.

*Levels of cover will be introduced as follows

For all products, battery, exhaust and MOT cover will be removed (catayltic converter remains covered)

Additionally, for 60,001 to 100,000 mile products, steering and suspension cover will be removed, with the exception of the steering pumps, racks and boxes.

FAQs

Q: If I renew my warranty prior to Feb 1st, will I be able to retain my existing cover as presently in place ?
A: YES. Providing you renew your warranty before Feb 1st, your cover will remain for that year on the current policy.

Q: If I make a claim after Feb 1st on my existing warranty, will the changes be applied?
A: NO. Cover applies as per the existing warranty.

Q: My vehicle is over 100,000 miles, can I purchase an additional product?
A: NO. BMW will offer no extended warranty for vehicles over 100,000 Miles.

Q: Can I purchase the current warranty after Feb 1st 2006 ?
A: NO.

Q: My vehicle is over 60,001 miles, can I purchase the cheaper option?
A: NO. BMW computer systems will only permit you to order the warranty option available based on your current mileage at the time of renewal.

Q: Does the excess apply to any of the other BMW warranties, ie Cherish.
A: No, other products remain unchanged.

Q: Will the excess be applied by claim or once per year?
A: Excess applies to each and every claim that is made. If there are multiple defects on the same claim, then the excess only applies once for the entire repair.

An example of the costs of this change is

0 - 60,000k Miles

Mini £543
1 Series £568
3 Series, Z3, Z4, X3 £608
5, 6 Series, X5 £894
7 & 8 Series £1584
M Power, Alpina £1050

60,001k - 100,000k Miles

Mini £627
1 Series £641
3 Series, Z3, Z4, X3 £672
5, 6 Series, X5 £934
7 & 8 Series £1353
M Power, Alpina £1868

Won't be long. Any history of RMS leaking sir? Yes. Sorry, can't cover you.

With all due respect, Alan, your posts, in aggregate, make you come across as nasty, as if you're pleased that this might happen to people. I'm sure you're a good bloke, but there really is no need for anyone to be quite so pleased about this. Imagine if you had saved for years for BMW, spent every last dime and then this.

As it happens, if my warranty goes up to £2k a year, I couldn't give a toss. I will pay it out of beer money. But I am concerned that people who aren't blessed with as much luck as me might get shafted here - people who have saved and saved and saved, and might left high and dry if they get left with a warranty bill they didn't expect and can't cover, and a car worth less than they owe on finance.

Interestingly, the RMS issue used NOT to be covered, but was recently INCLUDED by Porsche.

Why nasty? Life insurance doesn't cover you for pre-existing conditions. Most warranties specifically state that Vauxhall 4wd will not be covered unless all 4 tyres are replaced at the same time.

We're not falling out here, but it does seem that 993 owners take great delight in mentioning RMS every five minutes as a wind up when actually it's a nothing issue - a leaking seal which costs the same as a decent meal to fix.

I'm off for a pint.

Note to anyone who reads this who works for the Inland Revenue. I was joking about the £600 dinner.

Nerve. Touched.

IMHO the 996 owners are making a rod for their own backs. It's the usual suspects from both sides who carry one with the banter (and I include myself here) but as soon as the letters R, M and S are mentioned all hell breaks loose. So what? You may never get an RMS problem. If you're unlucky enough to have a failure get it dealt with.

I could keep myself awake worrying about the door check straps on my 993 but I don't. Do you know why? It's because there's more important things to be concerned about, like depreciation costs on 3.4 996s.

er, my RMS cost £828 to fix (that's a damn fine restaurant sir) and a recent poll on boxa.net found approx 40% of responders had RMS

I find the BMW news shocking, like an admission that they don't make the things well enough so they will cost about £2k pa to maintain

RMS has made OPC warranty a necessity on the cars affected IMHO, shmae we get shafted with a poxy 2 year warranty while US gets 4

Many M3's have had problems with the Vanos system, it does appear rather expesnive to fix, i am looking for an M3 for a donor rally car project and it is a re-occuring theme.

Time to chill and reflect that cost of warranty should be a direct correlation with risk, car for car... so if Porkers don't blow up... lifes good, if they do then warranties will be high and it will be naturally balanced by lower sales price and higher depreciation and the natural order and calm will be restored.

I fear Porsche will follow their big German brother. They have in other things: market share; over supply; design to a budget; widen the vehicle options etc., etc.

Warranties are about risk management, Porsche will try it on, just a matter of time I fear

I would just like to add that I'm not nasty. (we can do a poll if you like).
I'm merely replying to your posts! You're always the first to make a post refernce and RMS or warranty issue. It's ok to talk and get things off your chest.

Fair comment, but

(a) I do think that RMS is blown up out of all proportion - £800 to fix something shouldn't be that much to you if you run a 911
(b) I do think that 993 and 996 owners should stop baiting each other - door check straps being a good example of something which 993 owners worry about - I won't mention this if you stop droning on about dribbling RMS.....
(c) I accept that running a 996 ain't ever gonna be cheap, a but there are people out there living the dream on a shoestring and I don't want their dream to be ruined by warranties being unattainable.

I therefore propose that 993 and 996 owners stop ripping it out of each other turn on the Ferrari owners..................

In short, let's all be chums.

Nice lights though ...

Slightly more on topic, why do you think the BMW warranty changes are relevant for Porsche? Serious question by the way.

I thought the whole point of the 996 was that it was disposable - when the engine breaks buy a new one. Not like the cherishability of 993s, no sir.

Doesnt suprise me at all ........BMW M5 I sold recently, heated seat not working on passenger seat, take car to BMW agent, faulty seat heater sir, have to replace bottom of seat including its Nappa Heritage Leather cover, all covered under warranty £900........the warranty cost was around £1100......five claims in nine months on this 35,000 mile car (2001 X), total claims cost wait for it........£13000!!!!

If the cars were built to a higher standard and they didnt keep breaking then the warranty cost wouldnt be going up!!
