Battery Charging

I have not used my car for about a month,and found
that the battery is flat.I've just bought a battery
charger/trickle charger,but am unsure if i connect
the black lead to the negative point on the battery,
or onto part of the car.

I would buy a cigarette lighter end and wire it onto the 2 ends you have.

Much easier way to plug it in every time.

I go direct to the battery with the positive and clamp the negative onto the engine block. Tuck the whole lot round the back of the rear wheel arch so I can still secure the rear clam. I can send you a piccy of how I do it if you're unsure? (To tight to buy a ciggy lighter fitting as I only use the thing now and then)

Would the way you suggest (washy) be o.k to leave like this permantly
as its also a trickle charger and i don't use the car very often.

I guess it's more to do with being lazy. It came with croc clips so that's what I use.

Mines been connected up with the clips since before Christmas on trickle charge/maintain mode.

Mine too. Been plugged into the ciggy lighter socket for 3 weeks. (think I went for a spin about a week ago)


I have never had a battery problem, even when I left it un-charging for 3 weeks once.

Thanks Greg, just managed to wire the charger the way Washy does,but is quite fiddily, so just about to take an old phone charger to bits.
Thanks for the help, where would we be without this forum.

Karl, sounds ok but I think there might be a fuse problem with using a phone charger. Have a look, but you may find all the internals of it a bit flimsy for handling a mains charger. Most phone chargers will have a tiny (rated) fuse in them so as not to melt your phone.

Just I think he is just robbing the connector fitting off the phone charger. As long as he junks all the internals and any fuses he should be ok

Ah - got it. A car phone charger!

Yes - you need to junk all the internals, and make sure you put the red wire onto the right connector!

A trip to Maplin would have been easier!

As it happened i could not find an old car phone
charger so will buy a cigaret lighter type thing.

I was hoping to get to Brands tomorrow but it looks like the battery is going to stop me. It has been on charge using an Accumate via the cigarette socket since Wednesday morning but is still showing very little sign of life, the central locking makes a slight noise and the dash lights flash briefly but thats it. Car hadnt been driven for the last couple of months so I suppose i shouldnt be surprised and perhaps the battery is beyond salvation. The yellow and green lights on the Accumate were flashing alternately when i first plugged it in so it was obviously deeply discharged but what's the longest someone has had their battery on charge and it has finally come back to life??

Well, had an Audi battery totally dead for 9 months. 1 week on a charger (not a trickle charger) and it was fine for 2 years after that.

Look, I know I'm a technical cretin, but how the hell do you get clips on to the battery...from underneath? Take bits off? Or do you need arms like pipe cleaners? I ended up buying something to plug in in the end. Just couldn't see another reasonable way.

Know how you feel- I had the same problem yesterday after not driving my 3R for 3-4 weeks. Had to jump start from my other car - interesting time unclipping the crocodiles from the battery when the engine is running!!! Keep any cuffs tight up your arm!!

just bought a noble m12 3R over here in the USA. Called the dealer about trickle charging due to our long harsh winter. He sent me detailed instructions on installing a Schumacher trickle charger permanently under the front clam shell. happy to post his email. any other suggestions that are easier. I dont understand the install procedure for the cigarette light idea. Can you post details?
