We ran our directors car at a restricted 445bhp. We have graphs to prove and more to come.

Mike,
How have you achieved this? Is it a complete going over or is it just bigger turbos/more boost?

Martin.

No upgraded internals (rods, crank etc.)? Surely that's heading for a large bang at some point.....

Yes if it's not treated with the utmost care,
but if the fuel is very clean and oil looked after very well and there is no poteintial for fuel starvation then it could be okay - but who wants to be looking after their car in the same level of detail that an F1 team might look after a car?

Mike,
How many miles have you put on the upgraded engine?...and how hard has it been pushed/tracked?

Regards, Martin.

But for how long....

If you read the US forums, then the M400 internals are different to the 3R to cope with the additional power. All US engine builders have also been upgrading them when they have been playing.

Given it's a US engine I think I'd trust the judgement of US Ford tuning companies, and that seems to suggest an upgrade is needed for the 3R to get towards M400 spec.

If you are even higher than that, then all you are doing is narrowing the margin of error.

I'm no engine builder, but I am an engineer and understand tolerences.

lol .. are you suggesting only the US know how to modify engines, or just that you trust what they say but not our home-grown tuners? Don't you think Nobles would know what went into all the engines? The underlying sceptical tone of your posts intrigues me.

It can't be hard getting it to 445bhp...keeping it running day in-day out, plus track days, for any length of time is the true test.

Standard internals on an M400 engine or a 3R engine though, it does make something of a difference due to the compression ratio changes....

No - just pointing out that JRM seem to be doing things different than the US guys. Couple that with the recent postings from Micknall about unapproved upgrades (i.e. no 3rd party engine upgrades are approved by the factory) to come on and make one-liner claims has to be questioned.

In the same vein, your tone of question to me intrigues me...

Getting big boosts with turbos isn't that hard. As mentioned above, the question is longetivity and heat management (which imho isn't the strongest suit of the m12 anyway).

This is all very interesting, and I guess only time will tell how well the standard bottom-end stands up to the sudden hike in power.

It will also be very interesting to see what it is that lets go first (if anything).

The engine's potential is only just beginning to be explored now that quite a number of cars are out of both factory and third-party warranty. Very little is known about what it will and wont take - but there is only one way to find out.

Well done to those exploring new territory.

No, they are the same engine, same cams, same forged pistons, etc. In the U.S. when you order your engine from AER you do not specify whether it is for an M400 or M12.
