As I don't have an oil cooler (shock horror) and therefore no sandwich plate to tap into, anyone got any bright ideas about where I can locate the sender?

There's a plug in the sump (not the drain) IIRC that I could tap, by I wouldn't have thought that the sender would be constantly in the oil in that position?

Any suggestions?

There a loads of in line adaptors available.

Or what about a sandwich plate for the oil filter?

I have a spare plate if you want would seam an extreme adaptation just to fit a sensor though.

Hi Brian,

It does, but it looks increasingly like it's the route I will have to go. That said, I've been umming and ahhhing about the oil cooler and this helps justify it.

On that basis, I'd be happy to relieve you of the spare sandwich plate! Don't suppose you're around later today so I can collect from you?

Somewhere in the sump is probably the easiest. Although as you suspect the location is important. Originally I had mine in a taped hole on top of the wing of the sump but this did give a rather delayed story of events. You need something in a good flow which would generally rule out using the takeoff near the top of the block that is usually used for the oil pressure sender. So, I would get a bung welded to the sump, near the oil feed to the pump but then you already have it in the car with sump on so bu66er!

Yeah, I concluded that having it in the wing of the sump (on top where there is a handy bung) would give odd readings as the oil sloshes about.

If it's worth doing, then it's worth doing well, so on that basis it looks like I'll be fitting an oil cooler after all. Still, it's peace of mind and all that.

If you're not going to track it, (and can do without cooler!) do you really need an oil temp gauge? Just take it easy on revs for the first few miles until water temp has been up to normal for a while. Plenty cars do without O/T gauge and unless your engine is a highly stressed temperamental thing, I reckon will be OK.

Fair point, but having spent a grand on a Stack dash system, it would seem a shame not to use it

Agreed, must say I too like having an array of engine parameter readings at my disposal whether useful or not. Its the frustrated spaceship pilot in us all.

I used to have an oil temp gauge, then i lost it because the sender wouldn't clear the HEI dizzy. After fitting the turbo's I thought I better hook it up again - was very suprised to see over 130'c on the gauge. Fitted an oil cooler, and it never goes over 90'c now. All this time water temps were normal, so never assume your oil is OK just because the water is normal.
(had a similar story on a rover v8 too)

If you have an oil cooler and remote oil filter then you will have an adaptor in place of the filter/sandwich plate.
I drilled and tapped mine to take the sensor.

Looks like I need to get the cleaners in.

Heck Steve, looks like your takeoff plate leaks more than mine! I put my sensor in the top of the remote filter housing, like you I just tapped a 1/8 NPT hole and a little PTFE tape to seal it all up.

Ditto! Little bit of oil about the place stops corrosion though!

Err.. Steve, which bit of "As I don't have an oil cooler (shock horror) and therefore no sandwich plate to tap into, anyone got any bright ideas about where I can locate the sender? " didn't make sense

I know where to fit it if I had one - after all, it's on my website from the GTR build!

PS. I'd get that leak sorted if I were you!

I ran for a while without the oil cooler during running in and it definatelly didn't like it as in the few times I got caught in trafic in that period it wanted to overheat. As soon as I fitted one I never had problems in trafic.

Yeah, after considering my options (and relieving Crazy of a spare sandwich plate) I'm going to fit one after all. So in a way, problem solved

Don't forget an oilstat! IMO this is very important and helps the engine maintain a healthy working temperature. Although I can imagine that you costs are rising quite quickly with recards all this oil related work, but it is well worth it.

Err, mis-read that somewhat.
Does this mean I was laying on the garage floor, late in the evening, taking pictures for nothing? Even worse airing my oily bits for all to see.

I don't think it's leaking any more just left over from the previous leaks.
