Bloody 'ell, I must be getting old (Im nearly 25....) I bent down to put my socks on this morning - and low and behold I couldn't getback up again!

The best I can get to is an 'OAP Style' hunched over shuffle.

I'm booked into the oesteopath this afternoon...has anyone got any ideas how long I'm going to be disabled for? Is it likely to gte sorted this afternoon?

Cheers

MrF (hunched over his keyboard)

Depends what injury you've got!

I often sprain/strain my back (started when I was 18). Anything can set it off (including putting on socks!) and it generally lasts maximum a day in it's worst form and around 3 days to repair back to normal.

I've been seeing a masseuse who's work ensures I doin't suffer so often

Best thing for the pain in my case is ibuprofen or alcohol helps a little!

Osteopath is recommended route.

Could be loads of things but suffered similar symptoms with my "bulging disc"....regular treatment by Osteo finally resolved that......after about 2 years....

Good Luck!

Lower back. No pain anywhere else just there. On advise from the oesteopath over the phone I'm trying to keep mobile. This is starting to make my thigh muscles ache.....

Trouble is....I've just spent over a grand on my first snowborading holiday, flying out a week on sunday!

I'll be gutted if I cant go.

obviously it's reading a hell of a lot into very little info, but bending over like that in the a.m. is a classic way of slipping a disc ... bending forwards means you loose the "lordosis" .... inward curveture of the lower back ... and a disc can partially slip out ... like ... err ... the meat slipping out of a burger if you squeeze one side.

If that is the type of injury, try lying face down on the floor (known in the world of Mckenzie exercises as "extension in lying" ... and considered a bad-back "first aid" move). The Mc (Mac?) Kenzie stuff worked well for me ... but treat all this with caution. if you get any pins and needles feelings in your legs or numbness you may be risking a spinal cord injury ... ace.

P.S. the advice to try to keep going as much as possible is now the standard response and apparently backed up by proper research.

Don't p155 about with back injuries. I rather suspect the snowboarding will be off for this year; as a newbie you'll spend a lot of time landing hard on your ar$e and putting a shock through your spine.

In helpful mode, I take it you took out travel insurance for the snowboarding trip? If so, you should be able to claim some or all of the cost back, so it might be worth seeing your GP as well as or even intead of the osteopath (i.e. get the GP to refer you rather than make your own private appointment - gets your problem in the system "officially"

I too had that ... then had a major fark up collapse on the floor incident over the summer. Diagnosis was that I've probably been slipping a disc from time to time since I was about 20. Normally it fixed itself and settled down as you describe. Having finally seen a physio who could explain exactly what was going wrong, I'm now much more aware of the what constitutes a risky move, ways of avoiding them and also effective things to do when I do get twinges. If you haven't already had a pro check you over and give some advice, I'd really recommend you seek it. A bad episode is really, really worth avoiding if at all possible. It took one of those to finally get me to seek professional advice.

Depends where in the lower back the pain is, if it's either side of the spine and sort of even then it is most likely muscular spasms which will take a few days to fix but is nothing to worry about.

Unless you have been practising some sort of strange and/or sexual activity then it is unlikely to be anything major.

Back from the osteopath. Mr HeadRacer is right - the o/p thinks that I have strained a muscle in my vertebrae. Nothing majorly serious, and should get better in a few days. Advised me to keep as mobile as possible, and put an ice pack on it every hour or so.

Going "back" on Wednesday, but should still be ok for boarding. Woohoo!

I'm going to invest in a back protector though, for a bit of support for when I do fall.

A likely story. You need to get a rib removed to do what you were attempting.

Allegedly.

So you've got the same as me. It really can strike at any time, and keeping moving really helps.

I find that traffic jams make life a lot worse. If I sit in a heavy jam for around 2 hours I end up in agony

Shall we create a support group?

Well I'm back from my trip

The back gave me no trouble at all - the shoulders, neck, thighs, calves, abs, arse (!) took most of the abuse!
