What Tanks have actully seen Combat ?
Discussion
an when i say tanks i dont mean those lumbering krout cars driven by asians on their way to moqsue
i ask, for when i saw the channel-5 doc on 'the top-10 best tanks', the brain-dead arsehole people who compiled it, judged the leopard-2 tank as best, when as i recall, its never served in a proper military battle, just whimpy mockup runs, which can never be a truly real test of usefulness.
whereas the challenger-2 tank, with its double campaign in iraqs heated battle an a dusty desert an being victorious in both - didnt even make the top-10!
well duhh - doesnt success count anymore in tv-doc making???
of course the yank 'abrams m1' made it to no.2 - but it runs out'a fuel halfway thru a battle + it needs a british armoured turret.
an so i just wonder what tanks have seen real warfare???
ps- an did you know nazi tank reliability is a myth?

Technically the Leopard has seen combat in Bosnia in 1993 with the Danish seeing a bit of combat (not much)
Challenger 2s also broke down in the desert, mainly due to the British govt being too tight to pay for sand filters

That was in an excersize, in Iraq their availiblity was pretty good due to the sand filters having been ordered.
Re: Leopard II - It's a perfectly reasonable pick for best MBT currently available, the fact that it is not "combat proven" is fairly irrelevant, tankers who have crewed the M1 and Challenger II have always rated it favorably.
Combat proven in the case of the gulf wars doesn't nessisarily add up to much. The tanks they were shooting up were far from top line models. The RPG's the Iraqis use probably don't even measure up particulary well with the weapons the Leopard, Challenger and M1 will have been type tested against.
Really the question the should of asked was "most sucessful tank" which I would award to the Centurion, half a dozen wars over 50 years and the side which uses them tends to win.

Correct me if I'm wrong but is it true that not one M1A2 was lost in Iraq?
i didnt think any Challengers were either? Aside from that one that was shot by another challenger

At least 1 M1a2 was lost in IRAQ, it took a shaped warhead hit in the engine.
Speculation suggests it wasnt a normal RPG7.
Challenger 2's are amazing pieces of engineering...
I know a guy who was a tank gunner in GW2 in a C2 and some of the stories and videos he brought back are just amazing. The tank is nigh on invulnerable with its new armour.
Bear in mind tanks are evolving all the time.

I'd go to war in a Challenger any day. Oh & to clear an earlier point tank rounds are 120mm (or atleast Challenger is)... One regret in life I have is my regiment (3rd Royal Tank Regt as it was at the time) was in South Armagh doing an infintry job at the time the 1st Gulf war happened, our tanks went but we walked the countryside of bandit country... gutted.
People say tanks are out dated and a lemon on todays battle field however if you hear them approaching you in the dead of the night, christ does it send a tingle up your spine, they are big scarey things & they really dont care who they kill. A wise man told me that after i rolled a challenger 1 over on its side once as i was cornering it to fast.... no honestly.
