If you're looking for the 'true' Le Mans experience then Le Mans 24 Hours on the Dreamcast is what you need...
You could stage a realtime 24 hour race featuring day to night to day again, complete with really pretty sunsets & sunrises and it had changeable weather conditions to boot! Graphically it was stunning and pissed on the shoddy PS2 version from a very great height.
Cars had glowing brake discs and when the weather was poor you would often get contrails coming off the rear wings when topping 200mph....
Car control was good and pitstops / tyre wear / fuel use were all part of the race. It didn't have the anally retentive car setup options that GT4 has, but had enough to make a difference
Dreamcast will set you back no more than £20 and the game goes for pennies in 2nd hand shops & a few quid on Ebay, well worth it if you fancy the experience.
....gets off pro-Sega soapbox
