Was pointed at this site

http://cetl2.geog.ucl.ac.uk/uclnames/Surnames.aspx

It gives all sorts of intersting analysis about surnames, including maps of the distribution of your name in 1881 and 1998.

I found out that my (real) family name is held by only 43 in a million in the UK and is an english name. The name is has decline from 61 in a million since 1881 and is now more common in US, Canada, NZ and Australia, but is not found to any significance anywhere else.

My mother's maiden name was really weird, being english, with most of them living in Scotland!

The site is a bit slow but worth the wait/several tries for each page.

"Most of us are a mix-match of dreggs tossed out of every self-respecting country in the world and set afloat" is the phrase we commonly apply to ourselves here in the U.S. when asked that question

Interesting, my current (adopted) surname is most common in the state of Australia that I'm from. It's also predominantly a Welsh/English name, but quite common though Britian, followed by Australia and the US, not as common in Canada, Ireland or NZ

Real name on fathers side is 97% English and very common throughout all english speaking nations, except Ireland where it is only 1% common compared to 97% common for Northern Ireland.

Mothers maiden name is mostly welsh as well, mostly common to Britain, next most common country is Australia at 60%, US & NZ at 50% and Canada at 37%.

I note little change between the 1881 and 1998 maps for my surname: predominantly in Durham up here, but for some odd reason two dense pockets in northeast Norfolk and the tail of England (where Ramsgate is?).

it's still claiming 'busy' for me and i can't get the maps to download properly on my ancient machine, but...
There's only 180 of us in 1998, 5 in a million (up from 4 in 1881).
% ethnicity is 98.24% english, 0.44% scottish, 0.44% welsh, 0.88% italian and 0.44% indian (my mum, then ).

Are any pHers 1 in a million?
