The upper part of my heating control is spinning around in its mounting. I assume this is because one of the little screws has fallen out and needs putting back. I've had a look at Trefor's step by step guide to removing the dash. From the pictures it looks like something I could manage to do.

Do any of you have any wise words before I start dismantling my car?

Disconnect the battery before you poke around inside the dash with a screwdriver!

See if you can manage to replace whatever screw's fallen out by just lifting the left side of the dash.

If a screw has fallen out it's probably gone forever - I expect Trefor/Steve will know precisely what replacement you are likely to need.

Hope you're working in a warm garage!

Ths happened to me once. It's easy to fix if I recall correctly -- the control fixing's probably just come a bit loose.

Good luck.

Sorry to see your having teething troubles... I have no constructive help to offer, but wondered if that was you I spotted burbling thru dark arches in the early hours last night??? If so, I guess the lack of heating controls is not putting you off driving in the freezing cold! Chim sounds great thru there dunnit? I often go round 2 or 3 times just to scare the pants off all the jaywalkers :justforthehellofit:

sometimes the screw holding the end of the inner cable is too tight and it bends the cable and breaks it, in which case it's easy to form a new end on the cable. be thankful it's the top one spinning and not the bottom one ... call me if you have any probs

I'll only echo what Manek said, because if you take the whole thing out it can be a bit of a sod to get back in, good luck

After you've undone the screws you may find the upper and lower parts of the dash are a bit stuck together. If this is the case us a blunt blade, link a wallpaper scraper, to seperate the two halves. Don't prise apart, just push the blade in along the length of the joint.

Taking off the dash top is the easy bit (Well, easy is not the best descrption but as close as I can get).

Putting it back on is more fun - be careful not to damage the instrument panel or the leather when re-assembling it.

I took mine apart a while ago and wish I'd cut down the right hand fixing bolt by 1/2 inch as it's a bu99er to get back in.

Feeling pretty pleased with myself today. I've fixed the heater control without breaking anything (even a finger nail) !!! I'm not sure my neighbour will get over the shock of seeing my legs sticking out of the top of the car though!

Right, now going to work out how to get the rear number plate off.
