The EU dictatorship
Discussion
I'm no polition, just a continualy frustrated ex-soldier, but can anyone answer these questions:
1. Who votes for the MEP s who are in power now?
2. Where is the opposition party in the European parliment?
3. Why do Brussels ignore the results in a country's referendem if it doesn't like the outcome, and orders it to hold another!?! (E.G Ireland and the Nice treaty)
My point is, this is not a democratic system. So why do we have it. What was world war one and two fought for?
Also, we have certain standards and reasons for doing things over here, and to be told by MEPs from countries like Greece, Italy etc. PAH !
This country has had it! Blair is making it worse and insults the British public by ignoring it's indigenious peoples and trying to turn it into his little dream.
Also, why do people call Asylum seekers just that, when they are purely economic migrants. NO ONE is putting a stop to this. Half the 3rd world want to live here. This country is too small to cater for everyone. Why doesn't anyone speak up? Are there any credible politcal parties willing to stand up for the British indigenious people? And I don't class the BNP as a credical party. Racial violence for the sake of it is counter productive and unfair on innocent people.
Something has too be done soon, look at our NHS, the public transport system, the crime rates and the HUGE increase in TB and AIDS cases in this country in the last two years. Wake up people and face facts! This is not racial banter, the facts are there.
Before I am labelled a racist, I like to point out that of two of my best friends in the army, one was a Greek Cypriot and one was a half Persian Yorkshireman. I also went to join the Muslim Kosovan Liberation Army to help them and also the Christian Karen tribe in Burma. I am fiercely patriotic to Britain and don't like what's happening to it.
Wish Thatcher was still here! Maybe if she hadn't bought that poll tax in.................
Seriously though, most people I speak too think similar thoughts, so why isn't there a political party with the guts to do something?

Because theyre interested only in themselves.
We as the indigenous population have only one function in their eyes, to keep them in power.
Blurs dream (whatever that may be) will in time, turn into a nightmare for the rest of us.
I agree totally with what you say about the "labels" that theyre using to identify immigrants.
Asylum seekers? From France? I dont bloody think so!
Economic Opportunists is more like it!
I find my feelings toward these people are getting more and more hostile.
When they turn around and bite the hand that feeds them by setting up Mosques for the recruitment of terrorists, openly slagging the people of this country, making threats aginst its citizens, and then taking whatever they can, usually by fraudulent means, it makes me sick.
And all the time the message from those in power is that we mustnt upset them, they have valuable skills, we must welcome them.....BOLLOX!
What possible skills can an illiterate afghan have, besides herding goats?
I dont mean that in a derogatory way, but i do say things the way i see them.
If my view is out of step with the rest of the people, ie; the majority, then far from apologising for it, i would have to say that its just too bad.
Just because a majority believes something to be true or correct, it dosent necessarily make it so.
Basically this country has had its chips, its not so far from melting down, and when it goes, i dont wish to be here, no one will be able to clean the mess up thats left.

I think some of your frustration is maybe misdirected. The MEP's are voted for by you when we have an election for European parliament. In fact a right minded independant candidate has the best chance of election to Europe as most people do not bother to vote. The euro parliament has representatives from all of the political spectrum, therfore opposition is freely available. While I fully agree that some of the legislation coming from Europe is flawed, the difference is that the greeks and particularly the French accept it but then continue to ignore it. Conversely our spineless political trash obey it to the letter, even if it is crap.
Finally I would just say that your great hero Mrs Thatcher, while in power, squandered our oil reserves on repaying war debts accrued by Churchill and the like, while allowing our manufacturing base to all but disintegrate. That is the uderlying problem with this nation and until we address it strongly we are unlikely to be a fully integrated member of what will eventually be the worlds largest industrial power. The problem here is that we do not think big enough, instead of being a poodle to the Americans we need to conceive the notion that they will one day come cap in hand to join the EU?

Has anyone noticed that those from Afghanistan who claimed that they fled because they were being persecuted by the Taliban are still here now that the Taliban are gone from Afghanistan and there are many other cases of countries that are now free of the "reason to leave" but still they stay here.
All the time they say that they want to come to England because they have family here or that they want to learn English and that they want to live in London because the paople are so friendly! FFS - why won't they admit that they come here because we give the best handouts!
OK now rant over

I'm guessing if they genuinely wanted to flee war etc, there would be far easier places to get to than a small island in western europe. Given that the majority of war etc is in africa/mid east then they even have to come through perfectly safe countries to get here. Some would say they recognise us as a bunch of softies who wont putt up much of a resistance to their attack.
Basically, the Brits ARE a bunch of racists. Given that we've been raped and pillaged by more invaders than almost anywhere else, it's not surprising that we get a bit miffed when we see foreigners sneaking in and abusing the systems that the majority of us abide by (let's not get onto the thieving, scrounging, fiddling, DSS-manipulating sectors of our indigenous society). I guess there's possibly a bit of bitterness that we don't have the nerve to do it ourselves, in much the same way as people don't like the fact that we drive TVRs because we got off our arses and made something of our lives.
We (well, not you and I) created the British Empire: then we said that any inhabitant of that Empire could move freely within it. That's what precipitated the initial Indian/ Pakistani etc. influx to the UK. People kicked off about it: Enoch Powell warned 'what would happen'. He was right in some ways, as those doom-mongers who predict 'meltdown' of the current UK no doubt will prove to be. However, folk have been saying that Britain is 'finished' for as long as I can recall, which is probably as long as some of your parents can recall, too.
Moves are afoot to close the Sangatte camp (although 1200 work permits are to be granted to pacify the French and let the current crop in). So one presumes that the rest of Europe is miraculously going to tighten up controls to stop these people getting as far... Yeah right. Even if they do, once the 1200 become established, they will no doubt be able to bring 30 members of each family in.
So what's the alternative to this subtle invasion?
Well, Adolf Hitler and chums had certain policies that some of you, I'm sure, would consider attractive. However the EU might disagree with them.... ;-)
Governments (at least in the West) can't be seen to be Nazi-esque in their thinking; however maybe a system could be introduced that exercised VERY firm controls on immigrants....
Here I must clam up, because I just re-read the paragraph I'd typed and deleted it, because if Ted didn't stamp on it, I'd propbably be hauled off by the boys in blue and tortured at some secret Government installation... or made Head of Final_Solutions.co.uk..... :-D

But we shouldnt be censored or criticized simply because we have a different point of view from others, or should we?
I dont consider myself to be a racist as such, one of the nicest guys i ever met was in my last job, he was black.
So what? I didnt see him that way, i saw him as a friend, i had respect for him simply because he was such a nice guy to talk to, well balanced and a good laugh too.
It seems that we're supposed to be living in a country where free speech is a right, until you decide to say something that someone takes issue with.
Even if do you happen to be speaking the truth.
Its very sad that we are gagged from expressing all our views because a minority see it as not politically correct. Basically its because they cant handle the truth of the matter.
BNP, NF etc are just a bunch of low brow retards with only one thing motivating them, hatred.
I dont subscribe to their view of things, but is it really a surprise when they go and win a vote because the power mongers are getting it so obviously wrong?

Hi Guys,
Nice to slate the EU, so why doesn't the UK just pull out? You'll have a lot of screaming blue murder by the British workers who'll find it difficult to find jobs in the ensuing economic havoc.
What'll the UK do? Turn to Uncle Sam? Great economically, they'll suck the UK dry. The US are not an economic charity.
As for immigrant policies mentioned in this thread, the EU member states are generally tougher than the Brits on economic migrants. Recently France asked the UK to tighten its rules. A a Brit in Belgium, you should see the admin stuff that goes on for "foreigners from the EU" over here.
And not adopting the EURO is stressing the British economy, British exports are having a hard time.
What would the UK say if it got kicked out the EU? Everybody would be crying about EU dictatorship, so while the UK is in, there is no reason why it shouldn't follow European rules.

So where and when are these MEP elections held then? How many people are informed about it? Not me matey, that's for sure. I've never seen any publicity about it. Cunning ploy, eh?
It's also true that it's our own goverment's fault for not standing up to these crazy Euro rules. What's is happening about the french refusing to use British beef after the EU told them to? Why are these EU countries allowed to tell us how to run our armed forces when for years we've either helped to bale them out or we've been at war with them. Lunacy !!!
But then isn't it all part of Blair's plan to integrate us and dissolve us into the United states of Europe?
Over my dead body!
Civil war brewing !?!
Oh, and one last thing. Is it true that all of our Ambulances will have to change from being a day-glo, florescent colour (which everyone can see) to the european pissing looking colour that some beaurocrat in Brussels insists on? Funny, I thought that ours were that colour for a reason. Whatever next? Driving on the right?
We're going backwards and all of these little things that make countries individual, should not be eradicated. This is one of the delights of going abroad, seeing different things and a different way of life.
Oh, and vote no the the Euro, if the questions aren't loaded.

Erm well its on the telly every time there is a euro election

I think the armed forces in the UK are excellent but this is largely due to the nature of the average squaddy. Historically the aristocratic idiot officer types have had to be sidelined during major conflicts for fear of them making a total balls of it. I worked for a little while as a consultant to the MOD on rationalisation. The colonels and majors I met were adamant that certain practices were essential to the Army. When I got to the bottom of why this was the case it came down to the fact that the location I wanted to scrap had 3 types of deer. I guess on balance I am in favour of some changes in the management team.
Oh and their is a great deal of difference in the USA between states
Whatever next? Driving on the right.
Great idea, cheap cars

Loaded or not, the vote will happen and the Euro will carry on regardless of us so why not join it and bring a bit of economic stabilty and revitalise our manufacturing base. Shopping is no substitute for a real economy you know.

I am curious as to how this economic stability will occur. We will have interest rates and borrowing regulated by the Bundesbank essentially. This means we will have limited control of our fiscal economy causing the City major problems, probably leading to higher inflation, and higher unemployment - Just look at Franch and Germany now compared to pre euro. Look at shops in Germany now accepting the Dmark again -DUE TO DEMAND...I don't think it will carry on regardless of us at all.
Won't be a vote for currency convergence in the life of this parliament for a start - its unwinnable.
Germany has 3.5% interest rates and probably needs about 1% - there are 45 more unemployed in germany every HOUR. They in recession - meanwhile Ireland and some of the scandinavians are close to inflationary and the latest cut won't help.
UK is the strongest economy right now - so why would we want to join the EURO... We don't need it and we don't want. The pressure is on the system now.
We wanted to see the euro work across a full economic cycle - we are only half way through.

I am being constantly told by Mrs CVP that the biggest problems with joining the Euro are that you then lose the ability to set your own taxation and interest rates. This means you lose the last two biggest controls you have over your economy, as after joining you've blown any currency valuation ideas.
I think we have seen the fallout in Germany and Ireland, whcih are heading in different directions (recession/inflation) but cannot do anything about it as they are all in the Euro together.
IMHO this indicates it does not appear a good idea for us to join yet. We need to do a thorough review to see what will be the impact of joining or doing what we are doing at the moment, simply running alongside the Euro. Mind you, what are the chances of that actually happening in any government we have the choice of. IMHO they are all as bad as each other. My perception is that all politicians are thinking of personal power rather than their responsibility to the country.

The relative economic strength in the UK is not just based on a fatuous retail boom, as I suspect one of our brethren above, implies.
It is in no small part the result of Britain's relatively unfettered business sector; unfettered in the sense of 'low' taxes and 'red tape.'
Relatively low taxation and non of the tree buggering tendancies of our continental cousins has allowed many businesses to prosper and it is precisely the non-meddlesome nature of general government, an image cultivated during the 80s, that attracted so much foreign investment. And why the hell not?
The Dome stands immortal as a testament to the folly of public sector works and proves how in most cases (certain infrastructural utilities aside) the private sector does do it better.
The overwhelming majority of people in our economy work in small-medium size companies who need all the breaks they can get ito of minimal regulation and low tax if they are to make the profits to reinvest for all our futures AND meet the social responsibilities AND media inspired consumerism that inevitably impacts on profit margins (in an ironically self-defeating economic cycle).
You see, we all have to make money and these issues are all about balance; but let's be plain speaking - that very culture of economic 'laissez-faire' should be pursued MORE vigorously...1997 prevented that although admittedly, Tory Bliar hasn't (yet) bitten the hand that feeds, so to speak.
BUT, when he finally sells us all out for Euro Presidency, just watch that red tape strangulate.
Perhaps like others, I know first hand about the minutae of business related legislation: it HAS got a helluva lot worse since Labour came to power and year by year, the regulations of economic prevention from Brussels grow and grow.
It is a bad thing and any economist not impaired by too much weed clearly realises the insanity of surrendering our fiscal and monetary independance.
Hail to Albion & God help us all. We are quite literally in the hands of madmen. Or idiots. Or both.

Call me fatalistic about this but do we honestly think that we are strong enough economically to be independant from the EU? Of the few countries in Europe that are separate to the EU have extremely strong economies which are independant to general business. For example Switzerland (banking and general gold hiding) and Norway (oil) - can the UK really stand alone? I seriously doubt that it can. Our manufacturing is on a down-turn, retail is a poor reflection on the public and the rest is service sector stuff - not really something that we can base the economy of 60Million people....
So what choice do we have? Well they are our closest neighbours and closest business areas. If we fail to be a part of it we will be left out and should the EU move into overdrive we will be left behind. Should the EU start to hit the rocks then it isnt a case of some small island of the cost of France that takes a tumble, but a whole continent with 300 Million inhabitants - combined a bit more money to bail out the whole region rather than just the UK Government....
Fatalistic - yes. All this ranting and raving about "pull the UK out of the EU" is great and fine, you are allowed you opinion, but lets be honest, if this were to affect you positively of course you would say that. But if it were to demolish what is left of our manufacturing sector and put 10,000 (number picked out of the air for demonstration purposes) people out of work then I would not like to try and explain that to them - "I'm alright and better of so sorry to those that lost their jobs because we pulled out of Europe"....
Not an easy thing to do and a dangerous game.
Cheers,
Paul
P.S. Before anyone starts jumping up and down about if we did pull out of the EU, why would we loose jobs. Firstly the pound would likely rise against the Euro and dollar in the short term (pent-up strength of the sterling at the moment not being held back by the ties to the CEB) - this puts pressure on the limited exports that we currently make. Manufacturing that is already on the brink then collapses with the uncompetitive nature of their products. Couple that with the fact that raw materials and components from the EU for things like cars would increase sending costs sawing. For sectors such as the car manufacturing business - those pressures would be sufficient to make some (not all) makers to move their factories elsewhere. Considering that the likes of Toyota and Honda employ thousands in their factories - it doesnt take a whole lot of imagination to consider what would happen.... So it is based in fact and reasonable understanding of economics - not on wild conjecture and xenophobia...
