High water temps
Discussion
Coolant rises to 107c when stationary and get water sensor errors on screen. Had one incident of steam venting through the expansion tank cap. Water temps are normal on open road. Fans are working and no loss of coolant. Had it checked out at a dealer a few weeks back and after bleeding the system was okay for a couple of weeks. Discovered yesterday that if I rev the engine when stationary on tickover I can bring the temp down to normal levels. Anyone had similar?

I had the same for some months: the fault was the water sensor, and even if the sensor is fixed, you have to care, that there is no air in the water circulation for sure. the broken sensor delivers wrong figures to the vents, so they run, but too late.

Rolex,
Had the same symptoms with my car recently, even down to the same result when revving from stationary. i.e. brings temperature down to normal. In my case, it was down to an airlock in the system. Took it down to my dealer and has been fine since sorted (although that was only last weekend - so I'll monitor it over the coming weeks!) Apparently they're quite difficult to refill without getting airlocks. Echoing others, I'd have another word with the dealer if I were you.

btw - nice colour!

I get similar high temps at prolonged tickover in my lotus elise and also get a big reduction if i rev it a few times. I've been told that it is because the fluid does not circulate quickly enough on tickover and the pipe run from the rad to the engine is fairly long. Revving the engine momentarily boosts the flow giving the engine a big wodge of cooled water.
Hope this helps.
PS. am an ex griff owner looking into tam ownership, Any info on tam weakness'would be appreciated.

Thanks guys. RMC, let us know if its a permanant cure. If it is the water sensor as uli has suggested your temps may start rising again
Uli, I was thinking along those very same lines, the fans are working but the water sensor is switching them on to late.
The dealership did enquire about water sensors at the factory
but as usual at that time they were out of stock.

Rolex - Will do.
The thing I have noticed is that since the airlock has gone, the car runs much cooler now, when it reaches standard operating temperature (about 80-85'c). Before it was running early to mid 90's with fans permanently on, and when stationary, rapidly rising to over 100'c + temp warnings - doesn't do it now..

had the same problems with my t350c and went to back to dealers who did bleed the tank and checked for air lock etc. then told me it was the rad. when i went for a second opinon with the dealer i brought the car from they said it was not the rad and did an upgrade on the header unit and moved it from the front where you can just about get to it. and put it middle right side of engine bay and since then touch wood no more problems with it.
Hi,
I had this problem with my Tam since the day I bought it last summer. I took it in to get it looked at because it got much worse when I went to London and sat in traffic for a bit. The garage I went to said the Rad had a hole in it. Fitted a new Rad which exploded on the way back from the garage!
Fitted a 2nd brand new aluminium Rad, great, problem solved.... and all under warranty...
A month later and back to square one, it over-heated while sitting in traffic in London. I topped up the coolant, did everything I should but to no avail. In November 2005 it went for its annual service, during the inspection they found that the head-gasket had gone...
Fortunately, the warranty company has agreed to cover the cost of the head-gasket (£1800). They won't renew the warranty though, which I can't say I blame them about. So now I am waiting for news from TVRPower regarding the state of the components in the top half of the engine. I'm going to replace everything thats not in the current engine spec, as I figure they will cover the engine for at least a year.
Fingers crossed it won't be to expensive, I'm glad in a way that it happened now because its not the best time of year to drive it and I need the space in my garage while I'm decorating!

by the way , I got a different water sensor at the second case, but I don't know, which sensor exactly, I just know that the TVR-Sensor often makes that problem. So I got another
Me too, they changed the sensor while they replaced the Rad. They picked up on the fact that I had a different sensor fitted during the service, but they said many flavors were in circulation now, due to reliability/robustness issues with the original sensors.
Just an update on my high water temp probs, another "bleeding" job bought them back down to no avail. All was revealed an hour ago. when I noticed coolant dripping on the driveway. Looks like the radiater is leaking.Reading past posts on this subject I think its the old pinhole leak, undetectable at first until it gets bigger.
Anyone know if its safe to put radweld in these cars just as a temp measure whilst I drive it back to the garage?

Personally I wouldn't use Radweld and it doesn't just coat the radiator insides, but also the engine's too. And with an engine like the Speed Six I'd rather keep things clean and tidy regarding its innards. I'd be tempted to stock up on water and make a 'dash for it' to the dealers when the roads are quiet so you don't get held up in traffic/overheat. Or call the AA - thats what you pay for - do it when the neighbours are at work ;-)
