Hi All,

Some of you may read about my previous grief with my motherboard/video card.... well i have it working on the board now but its running in a slot that has been marked as a PCI-E x 1 slot!! The dodgy slot is PCI-E x 16...

I've been playing quake 4, GTL this weekend with no ill effects so far. I'm a little surprised and confused its working this well given its 'supposed' to be a x1 slot. I have noticed in GTL the frame rate seems to stay steady at 30fps - which in theory would be choppy, but to be honest i cant feel/see any sluggishness that would accompany a 30fps reading... I have just played quake 4 online and to be honest the action was way too fast... The GTL reading has me worried a bit as i would expect to see a higher reading and think maybe the port is topping out and it physically just cant shift any more data ?

I'm going to benchmark my video card using 3dmark03 and see how it does - i really just want to know if the card is running at full tilt or is it being held back by the slot. If so i'll need a new board, but it its running fine (at x16 speed) then all is well although i would be confused as to why the x1 slot is running at x16.....

Does anyone have any 3dmark results for a 7800gt or can give me any idea of what sort of performance ball-park i should be expecting for this card running at full (normal) speed !?

Thanks in advance lads

Steve

If you pay for the full version, '06' just released, you can compare online aginst similar spec machines from other users.

I don't have the older 3DMark software, but my 7800GT gives 7303 3dMarks in 2005 and 4018 3dMarks in 2006. My 7800GT is factory overclocked to 450/1050MHz though and it runs on a dual core X2 3800 with 2GB, which helps things nicely.

Your experience proves what I have thought for a fair time, that 16 channel PCI-E is nowhere near saturated.
