We have a kitchen that has granite worktops, but the colour isn't to our taste particularly. Is there such a thing as a paint or other colouring agent that can be used to darken them (preferably from mottled grey to blackish)?
Thanks in advance to anyone who knows something!

I dont see how you could stain granite, but I stand to be corrected.

Can't help with black or dark colours, but if you want it red then some Tikka Massala sauce is the fella you want. Yet to find anything that it won't stain.

some friends of ours have just spent an absolute fortune having their kitchen redone........black marble worktops and everything.

We were complimenting them on how good the kitchen looked, and my Mrs was just saying how much she would like black granite worktops. "Dont do it" was the comment made to us. Although they looked nice, they were impossible to keep looking clean and it was the only thing that they didnt like about the kitchen. Even though it was the real reason they had the kitchen remodelled in the first place.

They wouldn't ever have black granite tops again.

I must say I heaved a big sigh of relief as I dont think you can get granite from my local Wickes, and if I could my roof rack couldnt take the weight. .......

Cheers,

Tony

must be something wrong with her. i have black granite worktops and they're easy to keep clean. hot sponge and soap to clean and a damp cloth to wipe off the soap and hey presto.

clearly an inept housewife. i suggest her husband leaves her immediately.

Nah, ferric chloride is better, same result but without the smell of curry.

Granite always looks classy, until you spill alcohol on it. Even with the sealers that manufacturers recommend, unless you wipe your spills of immediately, glass rings or spils will show. Red wine being the worst.....even on black granite

Agree with that, I find it easy to clean ours too.

Can't say thats happened ours. After 10 years of family abuse and parties to beat the band (you know the ones, too many people to bother with spills most of the time), and they are still perfect. Not a mark.

I'm not worried about the maintenaince as we already have granite, it's just the colour we don't like.

Just had a new kitchen with star galaxy ganite, not the easy thing to keep clean but not that hard, I clean it with isoproply alcohol. (edit - thats what I use, if the professionals recommend not using it then I'd probably listen to them, but it works for me!)

I don't think it would be possible. If you painted it, you wouldn't be able to use it for hot pots or whatever. Plus it would scratch easily? I would have thought that the seal would be too good to accept a stain without a sand and re-seal or something.

in answer to the original question, granite is porus to a degree (especially in not maintained - sealed every six months or so) but I doubt it would take a colour or stain.

If you really dislike it that much I would have thought your only option would be to change it.

What you have will still be of some value however - ring a few reclamation yards, they may well be interested.

Our kitchen supplier suggesting an E-cloth for cleaning granite. www.e-cloth.com It only needs a light spray of fresh water on the granite surface and it will clean and polish the granite to a shine with minimum effort. Keeps it looking great.

As for staining a hard polished stone surface.? Never heard of it being done.

Replacement granite worktops will run in to many thousands even for a small kithcen!

Perhaps I should have said 'GOOD QUALITY granite COULD run into many thousands in an AVERAGE sized kitchen'

Ours was supplied at cost by a mate who runs his own firm. Still came to a few thousand pounds. However its not the amount of area that is the expensive bit , its the number of cuts required.

We've had two quotes both about the same around 5 grand depending on final spec, for 10.5 metres with drainage grooves inlet sinks etc. Quite like the idea of off-setting some of the cost by flogging the originals to a reclamation yard.
