hi, i am asking this on behalf of my friend who is a jago owner.he has a geep based on escort mark 2. it has a manual gear box, he wants to change it to automatic. any tips?
are there any other suitable replacement gear boxes that will fit, instead of a escort mark 2 one?
finding an automatic escort mark 2 box is very hard he says.

i bought 2 off ebay - ford c3 bordeaux one of which is sitting in my samuri
main hassle is where x member is 4 speed manual is about 6 inches wide c3 is 11.5 wide and the x member sits approx 2-3 inches further back
existing geep gearbox mount will have to be cut off
and new drop bars made from the chassis
i have a pinto 1600 auto geep goes very well
i think it suits the vehicle well

mk 1 escort is a bw 35 [i think] and should work ok will still require major overhaul of mountings as again its bigger than a manual some string box section and a welder should see new mountings made though

Why does your mate want to change to an autobox? if its for ease of use due to his/her mobility fine. But, manual seems the best box to stick with if he/she is thinking the autobox is a better alternative without any real need to change. Remember the autobox will, firstly, sap up some of your engines power. Secondly, they are generally not as economical as the manual box. A new propshaft may need making (think thats right Dr Seg?) so what about a 5 speed sierra box as further posibility?

Not wanting to confuse the issue deliberately but just extend the list of available alternatives.
