does anyone here have a W800i Walkman phone?

i've just lost all my photos & MP3 files when trying to connect it to my computer via he USB port

spent all day taking photos in London, was out with some friends in Battersea,
and all the piccies have dissapeared into the ether.

tbh it hasn't been that reliable since i got the damn thing for Xmas.

Bad one.

Sounds like when you performed the sync, you didn't go into the advanced section which allows you to back up from the phone to the PC, and not the other way...

Yeah I have one, had it since October and not had a problem. How are you transferring the pictures - manually by drag and drop or with the image transfer software that comes with it? Did it happen when you were actually trying to transfer pictures, or did they just disappear when you plugged it in?

the memory stick appears as the F: drive (have a feeling i know what 'F' stands for)
and i, erm, tried to copy those precious piccies over to my C: drive

even the Disc Copier doesn't seem to manage a whole album in one go,
copying the Best of the Byrds (22 songs) took me at least four goes.
maybe i should get the phone replaced (or am i losing touch with technology?)

Did you check the "Image Transfer" folder in "My Documents"? If you installed the "image transfer" software on the CD that comes with the phone, it automatically copies your photos somewhere (possibly the "Image Transfer" folder in "My Documents" as soon as you plug in the phone - is it possible that is happening? Perhaps do a search for *.jpg files on your PC to see if they turn up.

Also, did you install the USB drivers onto your PC from the CD that came with the phone? If not, copying files won't work properly.

If you can answer yes to the above 2 things, take the phone back, something is wrong with it. Or, try copying with Bluetooth rather than the cable, slower but worth a go. Both work OK for me.

apologies for going slightly O/T fido, but I am very close to upgrading my d500 and was 99% decided on the w800, between that and the d600 or N70. Is it worth it or is everyone's w800 riddled with problems?

I had a SE V800, and the phone was fine - the PC sync software was awful. It always messed up my outlook contacts.

I now have a Nokia 6880, and the sync software works perfectly.

ok. the phone now 'hangs' on startup. my sister thinks the memory stick is shagged as it reboots okay without the memory duo installed.

Don't 'not get the phone' because of anything i've said - it's functionality is exactly what i wanted and it's had great reviews - just i've had problems transferring MP3 files and now this with the photos ... it could be just the memory stick.

will try to blag a new phone next week, failing that, a new 2Gb stick instead of the 512Mb it comes with.

my v800 did that but if you disconnect it from the computer the pictures should come back, or something like that, i thought id lost them all but i hadnt, its cos when its synched with the computer it only uses the phones internal memory and the pictures are stored on the memory stick unless you specify otherwise so when you disconnect the phone it can check the memory stick again. Hope that helps

I have the W800i and haven't had any problems with the actual workings of it. The only probs I'd had is with the transfer of files to my phone. Whether I use their transfer program or use copy and paste the files all appear to be in the correct places. However, when I disconnect the phone and USB my phone only has a few of the files I transferred.

yep, that's exactly what i got! i did forget to disconnect the hardware 'safely' via the program a few times, but i don't expect it to fry my memory stick?!
seeing as everyone else seems to have no problems, it must be just us...

also, it has very occasionally thrown a wobbly halfway through playing an MP3 track (usually 'Little Wing' by Derek and Dominoes - so maybe the phone has a poor taste in music as well?)

it's the green (chip?) icon on your toolbar - just select it and hit disconnect -
it then tells you it's safe to disconnect the device.

Ok, some guy in Finland has the answer...

http://ilari.scheinin.fidisk.fi/blog/?p=20

it seems a firmware upgrade will fix some of the memory/transfer problems.

I dumped the software and cables that came with my w800 and bought a card reader instead. You can get them for £5 on ebuyer.

I considered the Sony phone but I have bought the Motorola V3i! I can reccommend it to anyone! However I have always liked the Nokias.

This is a known issue with firmware version R1N035...

Those of you that picked up a W800i a while ago are probably still running R1L002.

R1AA008 is the latest stable version and is purported by Sony Ericsson to fix the inherent transfer problem. - Use the SonyEricsson Update Service on their website to reflash your phone. (Follow all the instructions carefully and make sure you install the flash drivers for the phone or you might screw it totally).

i used to have Motorolas - totally dependable, till one day when it got soaked in one of these freak rain showers. the phone was in my pocket, but Motorola Vs seem to have more holes in the casing than a TVR Sagaris, thus letting in water very easily. i then replaced this with another Motorola, which got stolen. then i paid for a Sony Ericsson K700i which was one of the best phones i've had.

wondering if anyone in the Vodaphone store will actually know what 'R1AA008' is? think i'll just try bleating at them till i get a new phone.
