How do we feel on these devices, CS gas etc.. I mean i'm a big ugly bugger but i get jittery on dark streets at night, even in the day for that matter, should it be legalised to carry a weapon of some kind?
I am split, it could be like the theory of no guns on aircraft as the assailant might "win" it off you and use it against you.

But having been mugged in Bethnal Green six months ago i would have liked the reassurance only a Gloch can bring.

if you were allowed to carry a canister of CS, or some other such delightful stuff, whats to stop the muggers using it on you?

The thing is if people are routinely armed then the mugger simply won't risk giving you the chance to hand your stuff over, they'll simply 'cap yo ass' and take your stuff anyway.

Witness the violent/gun crime levels in America.

My view... if you carry anything, make sure you know how to use it; and if you have to, use it like you mean it.
You might have to argue the toss in court, but you can't argue from inside a chipboard overcoat.

Spray CS gas at someone and you'll more than likely get nicked with a firearms offence.

Whilst IMO it is foolish to carry a weapon around unless you are going to use it, I can see the point of something like a can of CS gas or pepper spray.

Still, I'd rather it was handed out by the Police to people who thought they could be potential victims of street violence, rather than have it available for any two-bit mugger to use on anyone who came their way.

yep - you'd only need to out-run Raf Dug not the muggers . .......... and I guess he'd be a bit slow with a 3 foot sword down his trousers.

If you're seriously worried about being mugged then get into the habbit of carrying a decoy wallet with some old expired cards, and a few crappy low denomination notes from your last holiday to whereever. Also carry an old shite mobile that you don't use anymore.

Forget about self defence hand all affore mentioned worthless items and old tatty wallet to Mr Mugger and let him be on his way. Much better than getting stabbed or shot.

Get yourself some martial arts training. Forget carrying weapons.

I think DieselJohn hit the nail on the head. If carrying CS or other weapons were permitted, it may just up the ante.

Much harsher punishments are the way forward IMHO. Chain gangs instead of community service, bare cells instead of holiday camps, convicts working rather than sitting around etc.

How effective is that? I realise that physical self defence is only a last resort, but just how realistic is it for an ordinary bloke such as myself to effectively use such force? I've got a friend who does Ju-jitsu, and another that does Karate, and I wouldn't mess with either of them! but they're both 6'2" of muscle and in perfect health. I'm 5'10" of average bloke with a dodgy back!! I would never even consider wearing a dressing gown and getting thrown around a gym for fun!

I like the fake wallet and phone idea... I don't really fancy walking around with two phones and two wallets though! Its bad enough carrying my 1 phone, 1 wallet and my keys and two trouser pockets!

Everyone starts off like that before training. After a few years of doing a martial art you'll be the same as them (well, not as tall). There's an art that suits everyone - just don't pick one that gets you chucked everywhere and puts your back out.

Stop being such a pussy and have a look around at different arts and there may be something you like the look
of. Failing that the fake wallet idea is well worth considering too....

Usually the weight of accumulated junk in my handbag is enough to knock someone out should I swing it at them, but if it's late at night I generally have my keys in hand with one protruding through the fingers, then should anyone try, they get a key in their face for their trouble.

Added to that, I can run very fast!

ps... good luck to them if they find any money in my purse

Walk tall , muggers look for people showing signs of nervousness and weakness. I wouldn't bother carrying a weapon myself but if you do, then use it like you mean it as the man said, one warning and then let them have it. Martial arts are all well and good but frankly it's not going to let you dodge a bullet is it? You are, by definition, dealing with someone who isn't completely normal and or right in the head. The best thing they could teach you is that run if you can and hand over everything they ask for if you can't.

The idea with the fake wallet isn't bad but frankly who wants to carry round two wallets and two phones all the time? I suppose you could do it if you know you're going somewhere dodgy....

Very delicately put I'll look in my gym in half an hour, they do courses there I think.

Sensible self defence will also teach you weapon disarmament.

Look into Krav Magna if your afraid of the wankishness of eastern martial arts, it was designed scientifically by the Israelies and designed to be taught quickly and easily to idiot army conscripts and teaches stuff like weapon disarmament and all the practical self defence you need without the pyjama suit and silly rankings. Well worth a look.

CS Gas you'll probably get nicked for, however, a small CS gas dispenser type bottle, filled with crushed Scotch Bonnet peppers, and an amount of chilli oil would be perfecty acceptable I would imagine. I can't see anyone getting nicked for carrying around a salad dressing.
