3 of them sentenced to 12 years for manslaughter, 1 for 8 years. Have to serve out at least 2/3 or their sentence. Whoop-de-do. That'll have them all quaking in their boots as a deterrent. They'll all be out before they're 30.

If they have only been convicted of manslaughter then perhaps that was towards the upper range of sentences available to the judge, but it is still too low for killing someone for pleasure. The biggest problem however is that under the government's early release policy they may serve as little as half that sentence.

I think you will find that the maximum sentence for manslaughter (and they certainly did that...) is 14 years, which is where the minimum (recommended) sentence for Murder begins.
The biggest problem is not the politically expedient 'early release program', in my view the biggest problem is more profound;, namely that to give them (and similar crimes) full life terms will begin to genuinely inform us just how bad our 'society' is/has become, in other words, give it say, a 10 year duration, and the (ever increasing) numbers locked up for such crimes will reveal in stark detail just how grim things have become, by early releasing them, and by politicaly managing the statistics, our leaders are able to manipulate the outcome from a relatively finite/static figure to a 'moving target' figure, at further cost to society in general and will undoubly affect the divided and conquered victims...

i totally agree with you, but then i am part of the hang em brigade.
i think this was murder, and i still think that slitting someones throat is attempted murder. if you don't intend to kill them - don't slit their throat - simple as that. in this particular case, kicking someones head around like a football is attempted murder until you succeed and then it becomes murder. if you didn't intend to kill him - don't kick their head repeatedly.
this just ticks me off.
This country is screwed. What a fantastic deterrent the justice system is...
Each of these little £uckers should be strapped in a chair and administered death by lethal injection. Film that on your mobiles you cnuts...
12 years for manslaughter my @rse. They deliberately kicked and stamped a man to death FFS!

I do think it's ridiculous that they got manslaughter instead of murder though, how hard was it to prove they decided beforehand to attack the guy, and that he didn't provoke them into an uncontrolable rage? Disgusting.

For what it's worth, that is not entirely correct, 'good behaviour' will almost without exception, lessen the overall sentence. It is the cunning way they have created and legislated the 'early release' policy. more spin and double speak from our masters I’m afraid. In short, 'early release' is not exclusive, it is just another layer of legislation drafted by people that would do well in the world of advertising...
On a (slightly) different note, the threat of a full life term didn't stop these animals doing what they did: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/464057
Something more fundamental is at play here, something very deep and dark that has crept into our society, and its not leaving till we recognise the bottom lines and decide to act accordingly, our leaders are too busy keeping the lid on this pervading malice by coming up with relatively comforting one liner's such as 2% of the population -> 95% of crime.... which is just arrant nonsense...
These little barstewards have got off way too lightly. I would think that life would have been a more appropriate length of time. I have never agreed with the death penalty and never will, but these f*****s deserve really deserve to suffer. A bare concrete cell with a concrete slab for a bed and one lightbulb. No TV/radio, books, newspapers or playstations or time off for good behaviour. Ever. Never let them out and never see them see daylight. Ever. Dinner once a day (cold porridge) stuffed through a hatch in the wall. No visitors or letters. Ever. 50-60 years of that should give them plenty of time to think about what they have done and then let them out when they're 75-80 and have nowhere to go and no one to give a f**k about them.......
There is no "recommended" sentence for murder because there is no discretion available in sentencing someone who has been found guilty or pleaded to murder...in the higher courts where a murder case is heard they cannot mix and match the tarrif for a murder sentence. The only instance where there is flexibility with what a high court judge has decreed is where the home sec issues a mandate where an offender shall not be released for "X number of years", or willnot be released untill "x date."
There is discretion available with the offence of manslaughter.

I'm astonished that they got off so lightly, what on Earth is going on? This case seems crystal clear, they attacked several people, one at a time, for fun. Finally they kicked someone to death, again for fun.
Why only eight years for the girl? Why didn't they all get 15 years minimum?
We need an elected judiciary now. Then we can vote this old fool out and replace him with someone intelligent enough to know that murder is murder and that not all girls are sugar and spice.
Frankly I'm astonished at the mans father aswell. If my son had just been stamped to death I'd be wanting a long, long, sentence or, preferably, a noose for each of them.

As Tinman0 said, this was MURDER! and should have been dealt with accordingly. If we can't hang the swines anymore then it's about time that we all swallowed the pill, paid more tax, built the prisons, lock them all up, throw away the key............simple
When they're all locked up perhaps we can go back to being a civilised society again...

They are, all four, skidmarks in the pants of society. If I was that barman's father, I would wait until they were released and whisk them off for a bit of 'happy-slapping' of my own. I would not rest until all four of them were confined to wheelchairs - spoonfed meals and emptying their bladders and bowels into bags. No brain-damage, though. Just lots of time to reflect on who had put them there and why.
Damn their eyes...
