S1 Steering rack and propshaft UJ's
Discussion
Hi all,
My series 1 wedge ( No 21 of 1980) has just failed the MOT on excessively tight steering and a number of minor electrical bits. The propshaft UJ's also need replacing ( not mot failure)
It maybe the lower ball joints are seized, i wont know till I diconnect the rack.
Can someone please tell me what donor vehicle the first racks were ( not power) also the propshaft UJ's ( someone suggested they might be landy).
My other main concern is when sorting the UJ's the rear exhaust section will fall to pieces !!!!!!!! and no dobt will cost an arm and a log.
The door key has also snapped ( dont think in the lock) if I have all the vehicles details can i get a replacement key bearing in mind there ford locks ?
Regards
Steve

Steering rack is indeed Mk4 Cortina and are modified.
The door locks are Escort Mk2. Expect to pay through the nose for the door locks if complete with door handles, they are fetching as much as £50 in good condition because they are black and hence quite rare. All the Ford guys can't get enough of them...

I think the drive shaft UJ's will be HS166 and I have also heard they are off a Landrover. Buy decent quality ones with Grease nipples. Genuine Hardy Spicer ones are probably the best.
Have you thought about fitting central locking motors to the doors? Then you won't need to worry about the locks.
Let us know what you find on the front suspension/steering. Shouldn't be anything there too expensive to sort out. Ball joints do get stiff and make the steering heavy. Also check the steering joint UJ's they get lots of muck thrown at them.
