Thanks - will have a look, although mine was in a shunt (the rack not my car) and could be beyond a recon...

Found this
www.buypartsby.co.uk/steering-rack-display.php?txtmodel=Cortina&txtmake=Ford&Submit=Next

I think you probably want the Cortina MK5 rack, It looks like the MK4 is a cast steel body, must weigh a bit.

I got mine from:

£120 no need for an exchange, and they delivered it the next day.

Just had mine done at David Batty. Sent the original to be refurbished and it came back as scrap - they couldn't repair some alloy tube part. He got one from Bristol somewhere and they had another one left. He said it was off a Cortina Mk 5. They are obviously in short supply. What will we able to do when the supply dries up? (Not just steering racks)

Managed to get hold of a power steering rack for a Mk5 cortina - completley different from my rack!!!

Apparently mine is off a Rover SD1 (and a "burman" type rack)

I now have a Rover SD1 rack on order. Next question... I have just purchased a pair of Mk Granada track rod ends (before I knew I needed the Rover rack).
Does anyone know if the Ford Granada track rod ends are compatable with the Rover SD1 steering racks - same thread etc?

Am I likely to have to modify the SD1 rack when I get it?

Any help very much appreciated as ever.
Thanks in advance,
L33

IIRC when I was trying to find TREs for the Esprit, it dawned on me that the vast majority of Brit cars used only three thread sizes and two tapers. But I seem to recall that Fords were nearly all Metric after 1970 while BL persisted with imperial threads into the 80s.
In the case of the Esprit it uses the earlier (pre-70 Imperial) Ford thread but with a large taper that they never used... bloody Colin Chapman being difficult, it would seem...
For the TVR with a Rover rack, you'd PERHAPS be looking at an Imperial thread with a 'Ford' taper... and I have heard it suggested that the original CamGears (Ford) rack was actually a Cortina rack with Granada track rods as the track was different... so when you find out what you need, let us know There are certainly more SD1 PAS racks around than Cortina ones.

Thanks Wedg1e.
I shall add a post later when (and if) the rack comes up trumps.

From the research I have done various people have suggested the the manual steering rack is "camgears" modified cortina.

The power steering racks are either camgears modified cortina, or supra modified SD1 of whick there are 3 varients of SC1 rack in the first place

Don't you just love the continunity between the build specifics of the wedges?

SORTED!!!

It was the SD1 power steering rack (burman type) although the splined shaft that sticks out where the steering column UJ bolts onto it is turned around 120 degrees. simply undo 3 bolts and turn 120 degees sorted that. However now the pipework does not fit. Taken pipework off old rack and fitted to new rack. Jobs a good-un.

Trackrod ends (Ford Granada) fit fine

Now to see what problems fitting it as nothing ever runs smothly with a wedge

I'm just glad I am paying someone else to do the work and get the head-ache for me

Interestingly enough I have a Cortina PAS rack as a spare that has a BL stamp underneath! It is the same as the original on my car but it is very wierd. Camgears used to make racks for many people so I sometimes wonder if castings etc got interchanged.

No , I couldn't do it single-handed, I'd need tallbloke as well, and probably one of the Welsh contingent, and we'd have to take it in turns.

So it'd be "Wedg1e and Roger's Welsh Wedge Rack Workings Registration Rota".
