Conan off the motorways...

Anyone else see that Trev McDonald thing tonight? It's all very well gibbering on about accountability, but ultimately if the roads need repairs, either you close them completely or cone them off while the work is done.

I have to say it's all a bit rubbish. Whatever the woman says from the highways agency about every cone being justified I rarely see anyone actually working in roadworks. I can't remember the figures, but less than 10% of what we pay in road tax gets spent on the road. No wonder everyone is pissed off with them

My girlfriend was telling me about a documentry she watched on Heathrow or gatwick, apprently every so often they need to relay the runway, they close it for like 2 hours and all these machines set about resurfacing it and when it's done it re-opens ready to take fully laden 747s
Why can't they do that with the roads?
I'm sure when you think about how much road works cost all the companies in the uk in time it would be money well spent.
Then one of my friends was telling me about how the autobahns have tarmac something like 3 times as thick as we do over here
... and relax [glad i didn't see the program now :hehe]

There are two brand new stretches of the A1 in Yorkshire that were laid in about a year ago. They got as far as painting white lines on them, then dug them back up and relaid them. Now one stretch is being done AGAIN and as far as I know it never actually carried any traffic.
Someone needs to be vetting Paddy and Mick, that's for sure.

As one of the highest-taxed nations in the World, I am beginning to wonder where it all goes. We have heard recently of the Lotto paying out for hospital equipment and Gordon 'Chubby' Brown having to borrow left, right and centre to make ends meet - what the hell is happening to all the hard-earned dough rogered out of me by this bunch of right-wing chimps we call a Government? The only thing that springs to mind is the gang of embezzlers in Whitehall...
Pretty soon B.Liar will have to eat his words about 'gas-guzzling 4WD's', as they will be the only safe way of getting about over the Lunar surface that our roads are becoming.

ask Lady summerisle why that was - she carried out the testing of the road surface for that streatch...
i believe it was something to do with the tarmac being that pourous that it just washed away.
same with the roadworks nr rochdale on the m62, the concrete for the bridge never got to the testing rig. one cube disintergrated in the van on the way back, the others disintergated in the water bath back at the lab.

Allegedly, the contractor that had the surfacing job took a shortcut with the mix for one of the sublayers. It's concrete (or similar), and in order to go off with the requisite amount of flexibility, takes some time to cure. The contractor twiddled with the mix to make it go off quicker, and this made it brittle. Laying the asphalt on top of this resulted in an amusingly "off-road" driving experience as the brittle concrete broke up.
