Anyone know Mexico?

A friend of mine in California is going down to Cancun for Spring Break and wants me to fly over and meet him. The catch is he wants to stay in an $8/night youth hostel. Is this really such a good idea in a place like Mexico?

Si senor, but tell him to watch out for the Bandidos. You can tell these because they sport big droopy mustaches, bandoliers of ammnunition, sombreros and are normally seen in company of a burro.

En serio, Cancun is to Mexico what EuroDisney is to France. A bit artificial, but pretty safe. The main bit of Cancun is the beach strip, mostly big-ish hotels. Not sure where any hostels might be, make sure they're not too far away. Avoid Cancun during 'spring break' when loads of young US students get legless there. On the other hand, that could be the best time to go!

Spring Break to the Americans means two things....drink and debauchery! Throw in a cheap mexican youth hostel and I'm sure there'll be a third....crime!

If you do go, sleep like tigers do....with one eye open.

Mexico is cheap you should be able to get a hotel for not very much,

Cancun is holiday central so should be plenty of choice if you dont want to rough it but if your friend has been before and know the score heh you only live once and all that.
