Did he just write the Sherlock Holmes books or does he have any other accreditations to his name?

He was in to the supernatural and published some books on that I think. And also some studies of real life murder cases.

Doyle's bibliography is huge, all the various Professor Challenger stories, historical romances such as The White Company, Micah Clarke and loads of non-fiction stuff.

The Professor Challenger "caveman in a lounge suit" stories were good Boy's Own stuff until the last one which was an unreadable infomercial for spiritualism.

Yeah, the last one is a bit wearing.

You have to admire him though, he stuck to his guns despite being pilloried for his beliefs.

For me though, Holmes and Watson were what English gentleman should have been. Holmes especially, strong, fair, merciful but ruthless in the face of evil.

might wanna take a look at 'Arthur and George' too, its the story of how Conan Doyle got involved with several true crimes, and on a couple of occasions saved peoples lives. also, you might wanna read around the 'fairies in the garden' debacle steady fuff, its too easy whereby he faked proof of supernatural beings, some say in a hope to release his dad from a nut house. interesting stuff.

i also strongly recommend Alex's work: as a giant Holmes nerd, you'd be hard pressed to find anything more perfect.

I think you should be forced to read all Conan Doyle's stuff as a penance
