[sarcasm]
Podie predicts that the car that wins will have a greater number of cup-holders and storage cubby-holes than the other.

Cool... might watch it if there's nothing else on.

Normal 911 will get mullered by the SL55.
Turbo will eat the SL55 up.

No this is the 5th gear lot, ie the old Top Gear team so it should be a good review. Its the to$$ers on Driven who do tosh like the plate of jelly over the cobbles crap

Apparently it is a comparison of the best GT car...
On that basis SL55,something like 2 tonnes & 475bhp,point it and aim for a continent.I fear our beloved porker may be a not so close second on this basis.

Not so clubsport!

The porker should win because it has more luggage space for your continental GT blast.

I kid you not!

Video timer now set.

EDITED TO SAY THE PORSCHE HAS ACCOMODATION FOR TWO CUPS WHERE AS THE MERCEDES ONLY HAS ACCOMMODATION FOR ONE - QED

I hope they compare like for like:

SL55 AMG - £89k
996 Turbo - £88k
996 C2 £57k - C4 £60k (in basic form)

You just know they won't compare it with the Turbo

Much as i hate to say it, i think there is something missing here.
I read somewhere recently that in a standing start, straight line run an SL55 (auto) pipped a 996 Turbo (manual) all the way to the redline in top.

Okay, straight line, but even so....

In light of that last statement does anyone have or know anyone who has an SL55 that would like to take part in some unscientific research.

Struggling to see how that could be the case!

SL55 AMG 1955kg, 470bhp, 4.7 secs, –, 202mph, 240 bhp/ton

996 Turbo 1540kg, 420bhp, 4.1 secs, 10.0 secs, 189mph, 272 bhp/ton

It don't stack up!

I think Fifth Gear are doing that tonight aren't they?

Irrespective of the straight line results i'm sure the better (rear engined) car will win.

Despite its weight the Sl55 didn't do too badly on Top Gear's track test - only a couple of secs slower than the "record holding" Zonda.

Take a look at Quarter Mile Times - need to go to Google.co.uk and type "quarter mile rivals" and click on cached link! :

Yes an excellent result. I can calm down now.

PS - they didn't mention the 100% drinks storage advantage the 996tt has.

I loved Tiffany Dell's quote along the lines of "Top Gear is a bit long, Fifth Gear is much more interesting".

that was a great retort from Tiff...i think the whole test was a dig at Clarkson & Top Gear....in the first of this series of Top gear,JC said something like " you can keep your 5th gear because now it's time to change up to Top gear"...tiff's retort was spot on & they let the 996 TT win over the SL55 which happens to be Clarksons replacement for his 355.
p.s. I thought VBH was looking particularly delice in the bike test..
