I am about to fit a 48mm aluminium throttle body to my S1 135, as its a case of the usual sticky throttle.
Is it worth fitting a K&N cone at the same time and if so do you ditch the entire existing airbox? Finally are there any ECU related implications?

I've got the K&N 57i cone filter. Does nothing for power but adds a very nice noise. I've stuck a cold air feed from the left vent to it but even that will add naff all in terms of power.

You just remove the standard airbox and associated pipework and bolt it on. Takes about 20minutes from start to finish. Be careful not to allow dirt past the throttle body. You can reset the Idle Air Control Valve thingy by pressing the throttle five times (I could be corrected on that) with the ignition on but engine off but I doubt it'll need it.

Nice noise. No power gain. You pays yer money. I'm happy with mine.

For only £60 or whatever they are they are spot on. no real power gains but it does seem a bit more willing to rev and they sound nice.

Ah yes ,I remember something about the depressing throttle fully five times with ignition on to reset ECU.Thanks
You also answered another unasked question ,about ducting cold air to the filter from the side vent as it sure does get hot in there.

Follow this link and get one of these. They are very good quality and very well priced.

Ive got a K&N on my S1 and its pretty good, nice noise out of it on acceleration. A few people have said the K&N is the poor relation on the whole induction kit scene but I saw a thread about various different induction kits and for overall performance the K&N was the best. Its strongest point was it increased the torque more than any of the other kits, and from the test the K&N was the one that was chosen. I will try and dig it out and post it.

But its a piece of piss to fit and sounds awsome even if the BHP incease is negligable.

That would be interesting to compare the various set ups.Great if you can find the details. (Anyway I have ordered the K&N)

Got the K & N and I love it - the noise rocks but not really an effective mod. Seen people using plant pots and paint tins to increase cold air but it's the noise for me !!

As said it is 10min to fit.....

I've got a sealed K&N 57i for cost if anyone wants it. Exactly what it cost from Rallynuts... GF bought the wrong thing.

Did that and then got one of the lads in the machine shop at work to modify the airbox to provide a larger bore inlet pipe direct from the side vent. Worked a treat; sounded glorious and restored the power that was lost when the "performance" Janspeed manifold was fitted. Only cost a crate of beer and a fiver for the larger bore tube.

Nice one - although I think the hole in the side of the clam was a bit extreme!!

Pure Chapman!

Tim at Lakeside did a really neat job with duck tape but we had to cut it all away to get the airbox fitted. She went into Specialised Paintwork the next week and came out better than new.
