Follow the top hose back to the engine and this will lead you to the stat housing. It's on the front of the inlet manifold just behind the distributor.

many thanks. the tank was moved to gain better access and thermostat is out, ive just tested it in boiling water- its opening fine. its hard to tell if its faulty and staying open? so i guess ill bung the new one in and see. btw. i got my new one at halfords (the same listing as a v8 disco). this should be fine? the tvr doesnt have a specific lower temp opening thermostat?
cheers

Yes it does and it has a bigger opening. It is not the same as a landy unit. Fitting the landy unit can lead to overheating in some cases.

Have you considered running without a thermostat ?

my thermostat stuck closed last summer (griff 500), I wanted to use the car and had'nt got a replacement so I removed it and run it without one in. It takes a little longer to warm up, but not much, once warm the temp stays at about 80 - 85. no problems.
I have read the temp characteristics section in the 'bible' and can't see an issue as long as i dont start using the car in the winter.
I only use the car between April and September anyway, so i am not going to rush to put a new thermostat in just yet.

There are plenty of 'temperature problem' threads on here, but no one has mentioned removing the termostat, its usualy the mod-wise kit or new rad stories.

I would be interested in any comments from the 'guru's' on this.

That's a very very bad idea for a road car. Without a stat to control the cooling system, the engine will take longer to warm up and the operating temperature will go up and down as the air temperature/speed and engine load changes. These temperature changes are bad for engine durability, and if the temperature drops below the enrichment point it'll also suffer from overfuelling which will reduce the power and increase wear.
