To my horror i got in tonight, to ber greeted by our eldest (7) playing a game on the sky remote. He then gets encouraged to press the red button to register his score or something, which he did. By accident i try and make a phone call, to be greated, when i pick the handset up, by some recorded message, from some telco, saying the number being dialed is unreachable.

I have a huge problem with Rupert Murdoch's mob, allowing minors to do this, esp as they have been, nothing short of being tricked / conned etc to do so.

At no time does any reference appear to say that the digibox is dialing out, which in my opinion is wrong. To cap it all, i had thought of unplugging the phone lead, but if you do, they hit you for 6, with some contractual clause, stating that they require the box to be connected to a phone line at all times, so they can authenticate where exactly the box is. If you unplug the thing they start to get nasty.

AARRGGHHH!!!!!!! the pleasures of sky tv!!!

I unplugged our Sky+ box after it started introducing a nasty background noise onto the phone line. Within a few weeks we had threatening letters on the mat.

I wouldn't mind if the bastards didn't keep you on hold for 90 minutes when you call their support line to say 'stop sending me bastard letters about your bastard box that is stopping me using my phone line'

... oh the irony of it all

Contractualy you only need it plugged in for the first year if you got it 'free'.

Its only used for sending pay per view data back to them anyhow, unplug it and plug it in overnight once a month if you use PPV.

Cat started chewing phone wire to Sky box within days of it being installed, so I disconnected it. That was 2-3 years ago, and never had a problem. Just disconnect it.

scared but happy

Sky tv is just one huge con, it was £28 for the family package (most channels including movies and sport) just a few years ago - now its £40 or it might even be more. and you get not more channels.

you have to pay extra for sky+ extra for the new HD service, extra for some other channels and the box office movies and sport are a rip off. you also have to pay just to have it in more than 1 room.

the worst part of all is that you are charged for repairs, you paying out shedloads for the service so they should at least make sure you can recieve it. £60 the other week because the box broke for no reason.

also the skyboxes are crap, they all seem to slow down and brake when they get older, and the remote controls arent recieved sometimes for no reason at all.

but i watch a lot of tv so i guess you have to just put up with it.

ours had the phoneline unplugged yeras ago without any complaint - thats another thing, anything that uses the phoneline costs a fortune aswell.

Rabbits bit through the phone wire from the Sky+ box outside (without us knowing) and it trashed our ohone line. I unplugged teh Sky+ phone line and it was all OK. That is, until the threatening letters started coming.

We have Multi-room and you HAVE to have your phone line plugged in else they'll charge you full price for the second box.

Fixed it myself in the end, once I found out what was causing the issue.

I know this isn't going to be popular, but...

...if Your child is in Your living room, using Your remote control to play a game on Your TV, and they are presented with a message asking them to get the bill payer's (i.e. Your) permission to upload their high score, then who's fault is it when they ignore the message and press the red button anyway? Rupert Murdoch's?

This should probably be one of the things you can allow or deny through the parental control settings on Sky, but I think it's a bit harsh to blame them entirely.

Pressing the red button dials a 09....number - premium rate - if you have 09 calls blocked on your phone line (always a good idea with teenagers!!!) it stops use of the red button too. BT will block 09 numbers on your line for no charge.

Duck, duck can we press the red button? yes Dog..... (channel 999)

I unplugged the phone line straight after the installation guy had fitted the sky, it's not been connected since - with 4 young kids you don't want it plugged in.

On a serious note, pressing the button at www.thehungersite.com does just that
